in case someone could be interested i got wireless ad-hoc working properly by disabling network-manager and setting up things with iwconfig, ifconfig, route and editing /etc/resolv.conf.

thanks gerrit, this time it do works.
if you need to navigate between points (wich works without a gps signal too) you can add every point you need in bookmark.txt in /home/user/.navit/ directory....

the auto-off issue could be caused by the battery which moves inside its housing, i've resolved putting a little piece of cartonboard behind it.
if it's the battery then you shoul hear some noise...

by editing as user /home/user/.navit/navit.xml you get the same results (running navit as user) as you were editing as root /usr/share/navit/navit.xml.
you can download pre-built maps bin files...
