I got my N810 yesterday, and am having a field day with it. I have
  • Flashed the latest Diablo build (5.2008.43-7)
  • Set up the extras repo
  • Added a bunch of apps, mainly from extras

I connected to the wifi at work and in a local sports bar, and it has been great fun. What a cool device. A worthy successor to my Zaurus. I have a list of apps to install from garage yet, but that is coming.

I have a couple of questions regarding it. First of all, what/how should the external mini-SD card be connected? Should it be formatted ext2 or something else? Where in the filesystem to most of you mount it to or just leave it hanging out there?

Second, I have had it randomly reboot on me a couple of times. Once was while I was changing themes. I was looking at themes, one after another, and after about the third one, it rebooted.

The second one was just now. I do not have wireless at home (yet), and I don't have tethering activated on my phone (again, yet). So I was going to try to use USB networking. When I connected the USB cable, it popped up a message saying

Code:
Unable to connect via USB.
Memory card in use:
Internal memory card
I had just finished installing the debian-final.img.ext2, so I closed the box telling me the installation was successful, disconnected the USB cable, and reconnected it. It gave me the same pop-up, then rebooted. After reboot, I reconnected the USB, and again, got the same pop-up. The desktop I am connecting to is running Debian with KDE4.2, and the device notifier only shows me the external sd card with debian-final.img.ext2 on it. Last night when I first unboxed it, it showed both cards. Is this normal?

Also, does the N810 charge from the USB? Also, is there a way to change the original Nokia boot splash? Just wondering...

Thanks,

*If you open file manager you can format the card, if you are not doing anything special I would format it FAT32, that way it will show up on computers when you connect via USB*

*Not sure about this, I've never had it happen to me*

* are you doing anything funky like booting off your internal card?*

*In the past I have had one or both of the cards not show up when I have connected via USB but this has always sorted itself out if I reconnected.

Also, does the N810 charge from the USB?

*No*

Also, is there a way to change the original Nokia boot splash? Just wondering...

Actually, I run Linux pretty much everywhere, so I could get away with ext2. But I see your point.

Ok. I'm trying to make sure the tablet (which was an open box item) is okay before the warranty period expires.

Not to my knowledge. I flashed it and did not change anything about the boot (to my knowledge).

maybe I need to completely power it down and reboot, either that or possibly reflash?

Thanks for your help, Rassilon7

Are you rebooting with the charger plugged in? I don't think that it properly reboots if you are.

I am not. I don't believe that I ever have done so.

the auto-off issue could be caused by the battery which moves inside its housing, i've resolved putting a little piece of cartonboard behind it.
if it's the battery then you shoul hear some noise when you shake the n810.
when you try to connect via usb the system umount both the internal and external sd cards, the message you get means that one of the cards was busy and the process was interrupted.
if you have the debian chroot open you sould close it with closechroot or it won't let you umount the card.

Most likely, you have virtual memory enabled and had a few programs open on your tablet. The system creates its swap file on the internal memory card, and if the system can't fit everything back into real memory when you plug in a USB cable, it can't deactivate the swap file and unmount the card.

Usually, closing one or more open programs and retrying will lead to success, but occasionally nothing short of a reboot will fix it.

Actually, I do...Front to back and up and down both rattle. Side to side does not. I will try the cardboard. However, I had it sitting next to me (I was trying to get openvpn configured), and not doing anything with it. It was sitting on the stand with the keyboard open, and it just rebooted out of the blue. I wasn't even touching it.

Actually, I rebooted last night and got the same thing. So I recharged it and went to bed, and when I got up this morning, it was able to see both cards.

Yep. I wasn't running it, but I had downloaded it on the external card.

Tablet will boot with the charger plugged in. Also note that although the tablet won't charge with it's USB cable you can purchase a USB to tablet power connector cable.

If the virtual memory is turned on in control-panel, switch it off. If you have installed many apps, some of them might use internal card for a bunch of files. I'm not sure if there might something using the sd. App-manager uses is for cache ?
