Might be easier.
One GUI is just GTK (desmume in a terminal), the other is Glade (desmume-glade). There's also desmume-cli from the command line.

I had DeSmuME running on my N900 after a straight compile. The GTK, Glade and CLI frontends all ran with Glade having the highest framerate... a whopping 10-15 fps with frameskip at 9 and audio off....

The country and language selections are there, they're just not displayed correctly. Best to file a bug report using the project's bug tracker, or mentioning it on the project forum in case they miss...

That protocol is included in pidgin 2.6.4, which is the version currently in extras-devel. Creating a new mxit account using it was impossible for me so I don't know if the rest of it works.
