Turns out word from up on high (https://plus.google.com/+MayurKamat/posts/ETBvtp9VYav) is that Google will not be dropping support for XMPP at least for now. So I guess my original question has...

The same ephemeris and almanac information (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS_signals) is available (albeit of course slower) on the data stream coming down from the satellites.

Unfortunately, I can well see how you ended up feeling like this. I happen to like my N900, but I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't like to tinker with it.
