Yes this is what I did - use ~110K Ohms.

Using LM2596 DC-DC for N900
BL-5J is dead.
Converted a 19V charger to 4.0V using LM2596, attached to + and -. Added a 4.7K resistor between + and the third terminal.
Now, the phone is in boot-loop - repeatedly Nokia logo...

Good point.
For minimum voltage, i found it to be 3.4V written in file "voltage_min..". But I have seen it go down till 3.2V.
And Battery notification and shutdown seems to work on battery...

Had faced some ssl errors in Jessie Easy-Debian chroot in n900. I think installing ca-ceritifcates (apt-get install ca-certificates), solved it.

As per ur basic requirements like shell and ssh ( excusing openness), chrooting debian or any *nix on android should be sufficient. It wont really allow much more device control but a working linux...
