Force your phone to select 3G all the time.
I had the same problem after PR 1.3 and Nokia's meddling.

Did you clip the battery cover back on after you installed the card?
The file manager won't see it with the battery cover off.

Can it be configured to also make a discreet beep and/or vibrate? Because, just try to imagine, the device might be in a pocket, and the user's attention elsewhere.
