no one is forced to enter a relationship with mobile providers - you could always use a dumbphone and a tablet, an approach some have taken here.

Not much, but you can extract it with 0xFFFF (http://www.nopcode.org/0xFFFF/?p=docu&q=dumping) and try to look around (eg you can see the device lock PIN with strings(1)). Otherwise see this...
