No. You can connect from Ubuntu using SSH via the USB cable. Instructions for N900 setup are here (http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_USB_networking)
You would also need to install openssh on the N900.

The only command you need to run with sudo is:
"sudo gainroot"
Then run everything as root. After running that you just do "apt-get install Attitude", for example.

Mass Storage mode simply mounts the internal (and SD Card?) as drives on your PC. This stops the N900 being able to access the storage at the same time, because the PC is accessing it directly.

on the N900, do the following to bring up usb0 (192.168.2.15)

As an iPhone 3G user, a jailbroken iPhone - I did that to my iPhone 2G (1st Gen) but not my current 3G - is more featured laden than the original carrier based only iPhone.
