Well, I did get mplayer building, so now I will start hacking on it a bit more... Increasing the alsa buffer size seems to have helped a lot with the skipping issues... IE, it no longer skips...

I never found the finger scrolling very reliable. I have remapped the center button of the D-pad to pageturn; this works nicely for me.

Bug #2311 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2311) - please add a comment or vote for the bug as for me it happens far too frequently (at least 50/50 chance of no buttons following a device...
