The IP shown by websites is the IP address of your router. You want the one shown by the VNC icon. Though, I have to ask, why not just try both? ;)

I've spent a fair amount of time with the stock Media Player, Canola, and Media Box; additionally I have MPlayer installed and use it for videos.

I prefer Media Box because it works really well...

Think of it this way, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. IE, if the settings say something works best for Mplayer, it's likely that the same values are true for Canola.

i can't help you with top, but i can recommend load-applet (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/load-applet/), a toolbar app with simple GUI that lists all running processes and how much memory...

Did you enable qole's repository and install through application manager? That's how it is supposed to be done and rest is details that you shouldn't worry about (if it works)

try removing the SD card and rebooting the device. Mine happened the same after installing Mer. Bad card. Installed on a 2GB one and is fine but when I have the 8GB on it keeps rebooting.

1.) Turning on swap should help make your system run better if you are in the habit of running multiple programs simultaneously. I don't think that running the OS off of the sdcard will make it run...

I have copied files over 600M (movies) from hard drive to SD via usb hub.
If it stops I just re-coppy the file. I copy file by file. My hub is an ac-powered one.

I know nothing about Stardict, BUT :

Evince, available from Maemo, reads PDF and other formats.
( It also displays the left contents panel.)

Using it, I could highlight text and copy/paste it...

I think you should start with listing the web-sites. Also, have you checked same slow web-sites from your computer at home? If it's a network problem they should be very slow on a computer as well.
