I doubt alot of those features will happen on the N900. I recommend you get a Nexus One or N97 if you want more of a standard smartphone.

I would recommend you look elsewhere, doubt voice command or dialing will come to the n900 anytime soon...

Why not Motorola? And any smart phone for me doesn't work! That's the problem!

it is worth noting that all the pieces to do voice dialing are present in the open source community...just so you know.

In addition to the points mentioned, also take into consideration the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), which is the cost of the equipment plus the cost of your services. I'm getting a new cell phone in March/April, and I was down between the n900 and a BlackBerry Bold.*

Here's my spreadsheet if anybody is interested: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?k...tN25CU0E&hl=en

*The following smartphones were disqualified:
  • Anything from Apple: Lock-in to AT&T and Apple's obsession with lock-ins.
  • Anything with no physical keyboard (it is the must-have like some folks mentioned)

I want an everything phone and now I find that the very very importance of voice nav and voice command/dialing are not here!

I have AT&T, left T-mobile and will never go back.

If you're not going back to T-Mobile, N900 is not for you as it doesn't have AT&T 3G.

From your "important" list, it looks like N97 is better fit for you, the most tricky one might be tethering you want, I'm not sure about Nexus One, but on any Nokia it's very easy (choice of BT or USB) and nothing need to hack to do tethering. I like N97 Mini more, though smaller screen.

I think the N900 is a perfect phone EXCEPT with one big missing thing: OVI 3.03 Navigation!! Other than that everything is great....it's got keyboard, mms, nice camera with flashlight, emulators, fm radio/transmitter, best web browsing, push emails, Knots 2, recorder that can record song off radio and use it for ringtone, AIM/Yahoo pidgin.

So honestly, it's got EVERYTHING I WANTEED EXCEPT ONE THING aagain: OVI 3.03 Navigation w/ VOICE!!

I think it'll eventually come and FREE of course...but it'll take time which really suck!! By the time it comes out, it'll probably be switching to iPhone 4. That is why i am on month to month contract because i got a feeling iPhone 4 is going to take over the competition once again.

Interesting TCO analysis...

Any reason you went with Clear data VS the TMob talk + data Or talk + sidekick data (saw post here somewhere)?

Thx

1. I currently have Clear's Faster Home plan (6 Mbps/500 Kbps) for $40/mo. For $10/mo. more, I can get home + mobile. As I explicitly wrote, going down that route with a regular voice plan will be a kludge. :P
2. The cost of the data-only plan is equal to voice + Clear.
3. The plan associated with the BlackBerry was forced -- I had to get talk+text+web.
