Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@ysss:
That pic is absolutely enchanting. I have a projector (not terribly high-res, but fun to play games on all the same), and I think I'm going to have to do myself a favour by buying an xbox360, a copy of mass effect, and a new speaker setup. I've been eyeballing the Logitech Z-5500 speakers for some time, but I'll have to look around to see what else is good. It's not a bad way to spend a couple hundred bucks, and I suppose with a game system I have no excuses not to build a starter home entertainment system. Most of all, it'll enable me to enjoy these immersive titles! I'm just like you: I like the 'movie'-like quality of games as a sit down and enjoy pleasure. There's a very different feel vs an at desk PC (though PC rocks in certain ways as well). Especially for a swinging bachelor such as myslef... Ok, I have a girlfriend, that doesn't count :D... I kid, I kid... In fact, her 'toys' are the most fun of all... until afterwords when all I want is a damn sandwich.... har har Yes, I'm all giddy with excitement and looking forward to playing mass-effect. Don't worry, I tend not to blow things out of proportion only to be disappointed that they didn't live up to my expectations. I'm sure I will enjoy the game on many levels. Case in point: I really enjoyed ECCO the dolphin for the dreamcast for the environments alone despite some more of its serious flaws! Mass effect looks like a winner! Hey, do you know if many XBox360 games run in 1080p/i? I recall reading that few PS3 games do. I s'ppose it doesn't matter, as I don't have a setup that can take advantage of it, but it would be nice to know for the future. I'm with you on the tinkering front. I used to tinker like mad, but now I prefer customization rather than tinkering for functionality. This is why I appreciate the direction Maemo is going in. If I want to write a script that makes my life easier, I can, but I'm not *expected* to. I was never into the overclocking scene, but I used to build my linux desktop from basic distributions (like slackware back in the day), compiling the majority of apps. These days, I view these activities as time wasters (beyond learning something new, of course). With that, the appliance aspect of the consoles is a hard-to-beat characteristic... }:^)~ |

Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@Capt'n:
Yeahh.. any screen big enough to let you sit back and relax to enjoy the subtleties of a virtual world\presentation is good enough to play these kinda games, I'd say ;) I've read good things about the Z-5500.. just make sure the wiring and mounting systems are suitable for your room\setup. Unfortunately most PS3 and XB360 games run in 720p. But in general they're already detailed enough for living room viewings. 1080p is noticeable if you sit up close in desktop (pc) games setting, but less so when you're sitting a few feet away even with bigger screens. Yeah :) I wonder if it's the trend that people realize that low level tinkering and optimizations should be done by the vendors... or am I just getting old and reprioritizing my time allocation? =P @Zerojay: Those are awesome! How about scenes from Karateka? |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
I've been looking at trailers on-and-off all day! It's a shame mass effect isn't on the PS3, as I'm going to be forced to buy two systems. However, it looks so good! I know, I should stop going on about it already!
I'm looking at God Of War III and Assassins Creed. These games can't be as good as they look! 720p is plenty. Although 1080p would be nice, not having it is not a deal-breaker by any stretch. Sort of off topic... Last night I used a projector and anaglyph glasses (nerdy, I know...) to view a 3D CT-scan (fractured hip) on the big screen. It was really something! Although the image was monochrome, it was VERY convincing, and looked as though the object was floating in the room (black background, dark room). I can only imagine what a good 3D game would look like on that scale. Once you cover a significant portion of your vision, the effect can be quite engrossing. I'd play SoTC all over again to experience the world in 3D. Mass effect also seems as though it would be really cool to play in 3D. Anyway, enough of this business. I need a PS3, an XB360, and a sandwich... }:^)~ |

Both got their own pros and cons. -Big PS3 Shiney, easily scratchable with fine dust, and does not support Bravia Sync, Smaller HDD (except 160 model), run Linux, Use more Power, heat up faster, Bigger, and the Launched models can play PS2 games, 4 USBs, Card Reader, Support SACD, and more expensive. -Slim PS3 mat black finished shell, not easily scratchable by dust and not finger print magnet but not shiney. Support Bravia Sync, Smaller and slimmer Size, Bigger HDD, No Linux support, Less Power Consumption, Less noise and heat, Doesn't play PS2, Power adaptor is now outside with wires, Cheaper. :D this is up to you to decide:D |

You can always upgrade the harddrive, but soldering on an emotion engine chip is considerably more difficult. |

Also, just got done packaging all 14 wallpapers for inclusion into Extras. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3514/...9716c01e08.jpg Man... by the time the N900 is actually released, that package is going to be HUGE. Any Genesis games you're looking for in particular? |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
Streets of Rage, Gunstar Heroes, Earthworm Jim (especially this one)... even though I had a NES, and a Coleco before it, the Sega Genesis was just the system that kept me hooked. Axelay on the SNES was the only game on that system outside of the all-Japanese version of Final Fantasy III I somehow landed (had to remove some inner tab on the inside of the damn cartridge port to play it too) for the SNES.
Regardless... really awesome work dude. Impressive. Thanks for contributing to the community like this. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
This is why I have the wii, the Virtual Console is the killer app for an old timer like me. I have Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage on it :D
