Sun web seminar on Java for N800

Sun have just announced a "web seminar" on the status of the "PhoneME Advanced" Java implementation to the N800.

Am I the only one that thinks this is *very* cool?

I, too, think that this is *very* cool.

From an end-user perspective, this is one of the MUST HAVE developments on my list. VERY exciting news!!! Java on the N800 will open up all SORTS of goodness!

No. If I can tune in I will (I am on business in Helsinki this week).

I envision Sametime meetings on my tablet. Ooo, one less reason to lug the laptop...

This could be pretty cool. I hope they'll have more to say than "uh... N-what?"

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

Well the answer is probably "we're waiting for Nokia to release a software update including a recent version of GTK". The basic JVM has been running on the N800 for a while. How far they're planning to go in Hildon-ising it beyond a basic GTK version is another question.

hmm, does the N800 hold a cpu that can process java VM code natively?

i know there exist ARM variants that can do that, but i dont recall reading that the N800 uses a chip that can do so.

It shouldn't be a problem...

I've been runing a JVM on an old school Intel XScale 400 MHz processor for some time now.

I believe the N800's TI Omap 2420 integrates ARM's Jazelle Java accelerator. A more elegant solution from what I understand.

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

I believe the 770 OMAP 1710 CPU supports Jazelle too.

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

so in theory java on the nokia tablets should be nice and speedy?
to bad a similar chip feature do not exist for flash...

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

Both devices list Jazelle support, but enabling it is another story. I have also been told that Jazelle only optimizes operations that are already fast on the N770/N800, and that the speed boost wouldn't be much to write home about.

PhoneME Advanced is pretty fast as it is on the N800, it just lacks GTK support, and installing QT isn't for the faint of heart. :) Various people have been working on the GTK support, but I've yet to hear anything major. Hinkmond Wong specifically set up a branch to add GTK support in to, but it hasn't had anything past the initial commit (as of yesterday.)

I will absolutely tune in on this one. Can't wait.

Here's a (very technical) article from one of the Sun Java VM architects about hardware / software trade-offs without being specific about Jazelle.

Not long from starting now. Just me and the host (Hinkmond Wong) there now.

Is it possible to record the web seminar in any way? I am currently at work (it's 5 pm here in Germany) and have no chance attending the seminar.

It is being recorded.

Well, it's been going for 40 mins now. Any news, or is it pretty much a state-of-the-nation (which we largely knew)

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

They're looking for help for some relatively easy errors. Once those are fixed, we'd have a GUI version. Some other people have fixed the errors before but haven't returned the changes yet.

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

What kind of Java apps run on it? It doesn't run 'regular' (non micro) Java apps, does it?

zerojay 2007-09-27 19:04

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

PhoneME is meant to run J2ME applications as far as I know.

Arrrrgh, slept through it. Stupid time zones.

Post a link the recording, please.

ysss: specifically it's the kind of java apps that run on cellphones --- like google's excellent mail client, Microsoft's awesome live search app, and several others.

awesome, thanks!

Re: Sun web seminar on Java for N800

The first part of the call was Sun explaining how to get the phoneme advanced source code and how it can be compiled for the N800.
The second part of the call was one of the N800 developers (sorry I didn't get the name) explaining to Sun how N800 development is normally done using vmware.
The third part of the call was Sun explaining about the GTK patches which had been created but never submitted back for integration into the main codebase.
After that, I had to drop out to go through airport security.
I don't know whether there was any discussion about the difference between a generic GTK port and a Maemo port or about versions of GTK.

Shouldn't make much of a difference once we're synced up... Chinook, I believe.
