skype with video
I am sure that I am daft, but I have poked around and used the search feature here with little useful info.
I setup up Skype. I have the latest OS firmware. I installed Skype. I even made a test call to a local number here, so I know it works. Am I supposed to be able to see in Skype that my built in camera works and that Skype knows there is one in the 810? Is it that I need to just connect through Skype to someone with a video camera as well for my Skype to kick the camera into action? Also, Skype's site insinuates that I don't have to pay for anything. The Skype app on the 810 likes to make me think that I need to start prepaying for credits. So, if I just do Skype to Skype and want to use the built in camera to use video in a Skype call, I don't have to pay (?) and can the 810 currently do this on the most recent firmware? |
Re: skype with video
Currently Skype on the N810 does not support video calling. This is a Skype issue, and not Nokia's or Maemo's responsibility, since Skype is developed by, well, Skype.
You *can* use Gizmo Project with video for tablet-to-tablet and tablet-to-pc video calling. I've done both myself and it works great. Skype on the tablet is indeed free for Skype-to-Skype calls. The extra fees are for if you want to be able to dial out to non-Skype contacts and such. |
Re: skype with video
I was similarly confused when I couldn't find the video-chat option in Skype.
I switched to Gizmo also...it works great for calls and video-calls, plus it integrates your favorite PIM service, such as AIM. |
Re: skype with video
So how do I load gizmo on to my N800. Please take into account I am very new to this and cant speak 'techno talk' When you experts start talking codes etc I am completely lost. So plain and simple advice please.

Re: skype with video
If you're running the latest firmware (OS2008), there should be a Gizmo icon in the Internet folder in your web bookmarks (it might be somewhere else, too, I just know for a fact it's there). Follow that, and you should find a download button. Alternatively, you could also just open up Tableteer on your Tablet to get the download link.

Re: skype with video
Ok-- here's a thought I just had. I don't have an N810 (yet) but I know on my eee pc, you had to upgrade to the beta version of Skype for Linux in order to enable video calling. Could someone try and load the Skype for Linux beta on an N810 and see if this enables video calling on Skype?

Re: skype with video
would be great to use skype...let us know...

Re: skype with video
Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but Skype is closed source (casting no judgements). Although video calling is available on the Linux "Beta", that hasn't been ported to the internet tablets yet.
I have no inside information but we probably won't get a version until they do a separate port for Maemo or until at least the linux version comes out of beta and they do a proper port. |
Re: skype with video
and now we wait. and wait. and wait.

Re: skype with video
dang-- that sucketh. how is the video quality using gizmo? i know as far as pc video goes, skype blows gizmo out of the water. 30 fps is lovely. i'm just wondering because many of my friends and family members are deaf and i use video chat alot- but it really has to be good video quality to understand what they are signing. is gizmo video from tablet-to-pc pretty good quality?

Re: skype with video
Video qualiity of N81x video calls is limited by the crappy camera anyways. There is no big difference between doing video calls via Sip and via Gizmo albeit both using totally different video codecs.
In both cases the one you call sees a tiny, grainy, dark picture with slightly wrong colours. No reason to expect that it would be different if a Skype video client was available. |
Re: skype with video
Video call quality on Gizmo is pretty bad, but I am not inclined to buy iskarion's statement on the crappy camera. The camera is VGA and from what I can see, it si not incapable of decent framerate. If a video camera application can be written in the same way that a camera application was, we can confirm my suspicion that it is software related rather than hardware.
I got a fairly large, pixelated with off-colour pixels in my last test of Gizmo over my home network. But as mentioned above, that could be Gizmo related rather than hardware related. |
Re: skype with video
Interesting-- thanks for the feedback. Has anyone tried video calls over other 3G devices? (i.e. HTC TyTn II, other Nokia phones with front-facing cameras)
|
Re: skype with video
Ive done a bunch of video calls with different 3G phones, nokia N70 and others. I whould say that the quality of the video is just a bit better then what you get from the N800 videocam. Still its usefull from time to time. My 2 year old daughter where absolutly stunned when she could both speak and SEE mom on the phone! :)

Re: skype with video
I wish my mom had an N810...

Re: skype with video
Has anyone tried out flash video chat websites such as www.tokbox.com and www.snapyap.com? Seeing as how the N810 supports Flash 9, these sites should function properly.

Re: skype with video
Nope, as mentioned before, Adobe hasn't built webcam support for Linux into Flash :(
