My review...
So, I purchased my n810 on Monday, and received it Wendsday for a trip up to Maine. I was going to wait for the WiMax edition, but at the rate of Xohm and Clearwire it looks like it'll be out by the end of the year. That's way too long for me to wait, so I just decided "it was time". Anyway, so I bought the n810 off of Buy.com, which shipped it instantly and looked great. I ripped it out of its packaging, let it charge up, and then flashed it first thing with the latest firmware using my Ubuntu laptop.
Part of my decision in getting the n810 was GPS -- cause I'll be driving from Virginia to Maine and back. Secondly, to hold me over so I don't need to carry my 3lb laptop with me everywhere. So, come Thursday evening off I went with the fiance to Maine -- with only the n810 leading the way. I set it to skip all toll's and it did just that. As we're driving, I did manage to miss a turn and it quickly rerouted and got me back on track. It got us all the way up there in one piece, and I couldn't have asked for more. In fact, it navigated far better than my friends Garmin he rented with his rental car (so we used the n810 to find the Maine Mall, etc for the rest of the trip). For the remainder of the 3 days, I used the n810 to check email and do general surfing/news reading. It accomplished it all with ease. On the last day some of our friends met up with us (we were all at a wedding), and many of them were very interested in the n810 as far as replacing their palm pilots. I had to explain to them it wasn't a cell phone of course, and that many/most of the applications are open source and free for download, etc. Overall, they seemed very impressed. One of the comments that I got was that one of my friends loved the fact that he could actually hold it in his hands, and it felt like he was actually holding something (I guess his palm pilot is way too light -- which I never knew was a problem). On the way home I took toll roads, and managed to get back successfully once again. I did hit one snag when we went through a still-developing neighborhood since the waypoints are a bit dated, but overall no problems at all that I wouldn't have expected from any other GPS systems. Overall, I love my n810 and fully expect to use it to its full potential. My friend intends on buying one for Skyping in Hawaii as well. My one complaint: we need video hardware acceleration. Lagging on a simplistic youtube video was slightly disheartening. Overall though, I'm impressed :) Edit: GPS lock times around 15-45 seconds. |

We call people like that: "trolls" -- typically the type of user to run newbies off a board. |

Besides, I made no "comment" I simply posted a URL, you decided to add a "comment" in your own mind that. Did you consider that I may have just been pointing you to the place where people would get the most usage out of your review, thus increasing the benefit derived from your effort? Quote:

Scythe -
And actually, since this thread is hijacked, one of the reasons some of us try to correct newbies is because hopefully pretty soon (Oct?) the WiMax version will be released and a ton of new posters will jump in all asking similar questions without looking at existing threads. The board does not really need 50 threads of "what's the best software for me?", "does this thing teleport?", "gee - I got one everybody pay attention to me". Around last Christmas the signal to noise ratio approached 1 to infinity. And Quote:

Re: My review...
We certainly don't need a review like the one posted here, with nothing but good things said about the N810, its usefulness and how impressed the posters friends are. Why, Nokia could buy good publicity like that for a couple hundred thousand dollars -- why would we want it posted for free here? Especially not up at the top, in a high visibility area!! The least that could be done would be to bury it in a lot of other reviews so not many people see it!

Re: My review...
Wow, how does a simple review post draw so much trouble? Pretty innocent I thought so perhaps I'm missing the crime here. Hate to see what happens if it was a negative post. oh, wait....

That being said, it would behoove all that frequent this board to squash this sort of situation quickly. I already feel like I have been robbed of time that could of been spent on some worthwhile reading. I know it would be a full time job to keep up with correcting new users, but a quick pre-formatted response that gives the correct direction (ie please post your comments here and then delete the offending post) would help all involved. |
Re: My review...
sometimes i want clarification..so i pm the most likely people who may be able to answer....never heard if thats a bad thing to do...

Re: My review...
I PM'd someone once (cold-call), and I got a pretty polite, but stern reply back. Basically, the other person's point of view was that my question would have been better for the community if it were open and in the forums, rather than within a PM that he checks infrequently. Although this individual was the key person to answer the question, I understood his point. PM'ing people only benefits you, but not the others in the community. Furthermore, it's a burden to the individual that you are PM'ing - he is the only one that can reply back, whereas as a forum post, some newbie may have the answer that you are looking for, and they can to reply to it. Just a few thoughts based upon my experience in this area. YMMV, of course. I realize that we're completely off topic from the original post...
