Looks like I'm buying a PS3
Droool...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUPAyGWKd6c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X_e677aado I'm not a heavy gamer, but I don't mind throwing some time into a game both me and my girlfriend can enjoy (as a spectator). And hey, I get a bluray player out of it... Score! }:^)~ |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
Mine's just had it's 2nd birthday, lovely piece of kit. I see the blu-ray excuse for buying one still goes :p
And I'm pretty damn psyched for Uncharted 2, had it on preorder for months. Had a go with the beta and actually had to remind myself a few times that it wasn't real (yes, I had to use the old cliché :p). Oh, and don't bother with Linux, it's incredibly restricted, and subsequently friggin' useless. |

By the way,As a suggestion why you dont consider getting PC (AMD + some good ATI card) = will get you better gaming pc and more value per money. Now days, a PC game of any ported console game on it is having a much better graphics and remember you aren't limited to a part of hardware or leaking in updatability and getting a PS3/Xbox360 gamepad is enough. If you are worried about blue-ray I think you can find it nowdays for some $100 and you always can add this as a upgrade when you find a nice for it for even less. Speaking about myself, I am now more into PC gaming so I made pc for a moderate gaming, still didn't spent more than 7 hours for gaming (that was few months back). I would be lucky if I had the time to play a tetris on my cell phone :\ Quote:

Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
I went from PC gaming to consoles. In the end I really don't care about better graphics or performance, and I was terrible with identifying the right time to upgrade my desktop.
Not to mention there were games that you would never get to play on the PC due to exclusivity to that platform. |

The new PS3 won't even run Linux...
And you cannot pirate games. I like to download a game and try it out without wasting a DVD. If it is good I'll buy it, cause else can't play multiplayer (and Hamachi etc is too much exclusive). |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
Yeah, PC gaming is definately The most expensive gaming platform nowadays, and people generally pay for it to get 2 things:
- Mouse + Keyboard control scheme - Ability to multitask on the same screen + keyboard with your games. I don't think it's worth it to keep up with PC upgrades anymore. I used to throw money down that drain.. PS: I don't buy the "I hate x because I can't trial it first, thus I pirate stuffs off torrent\blockbuster\friends" argument. Games aren't the only medium without a consistent "Try before you buy" scheme, and there are enough means to learn about the contents without pirating it: all sorts of reviews from print media\net\forums\friends. There's also a decent second-hand market for games, in case you don't want it anymore too. |

As for try before buy, more companies are getting better @ putting demos. Though Sony charges companies for doing it. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
I'm planning on getting a PC, but a notebook (the HP envy 13 -- which is mad expensive, but damn gorgeous and incredibly well rounded). It's not a heavy gaming machine, but it'll allow me to do the work that I want, plus some light FPSs if I so chose.
For $299US, the PS3 slim is a steal and far cheaper than a full on PC. No linux? No problem. I have too many devices that run linux already, and soon to include a phone (hint: rhymes with Ben-sign-run-head). To be honest, aside from my workstation, server, and NIT, I needn't any more linux! The thing that most interests me about the PC is nVidia 3D vision. I think gaming in 3D would be a wild experience, but at present, it's quite expensive (pc, glasses, monitor == $1500 - $2000). With the push for 3D tvs and the like, I'm sure that consoles will soon upgrade a dimension. Also, I prefer to buy my wares. I play on and off, so it's not too expensive. Plus, I consume only quality titles (reviews, credible recommends, etc), so the cost is well worth it. So PS3, here I come! }:^)~ |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
Yeah, that sounds good Capt'n ;)
I'm not too crazy about 3D implementation on a fixed screen, unless it's as wide as the peripheral vision. I mean, it's been around since the days before 3DFX jump started the pc 3d scene (anyone remember Rendition Verite?). Maybe if it's setup on 3-4 screens to cover your field of view :D That'd be awesome. |

Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
I've had the PS3 for about a year now and its a great console. I tend to play the wii a little more because the wife plays that with me. The PS3 apart from being a blu-ray player is also DLNA compliant so you can use it with your tablet quite well and paired with something like PS3mediaserver becomes quite the media playing device. I use it more for media consumption than gaming in all honesty.

Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
I love my PS3. Uncharted 2 has my attention. So does Super Street Fighter IV that's coming out in February which will not carry a full price - I already own SFIV, love it.
But... my son and I play the Wii more. I just got Muramasa Demon Blade for the Wii... fun times. |

Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@ysss
Yeah, a larger screen *does* make a difference with 3D, and so does resolution. 3-4 screens would be amazing! I recall hearing about a curved back-projection screen, at one years e3/ces, but it didn't seem to pan out, as I haven't heard of it since. Playing shadow of the colossus (or something similar) in 3D would be heavenly. @f(x) That is COOL! Wow, what a neat hack. I don't know why I hadn't even considered that something like this would be possible! Unfortunately, the lappy I want doesn't have a express-card slot, and it's so thin that I doubt it'll fit a mini PCI-E. However, this is just too cool! If I end up getting a laptop that has the necessary slots/space, I'll definitely look into this! @zerojay, Nice work man! I love emulation, and love that interface. Not needing to jump between programs to have access to a library is pretty nifty. Hey, we still get to use our N900s for all of the mentioned content, plus have the benefit of outputting directly to the big-screen. Hell, I could even control using a PS3 gamepad. }:^)~ |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
Consoles r cool, but pc is better. PC-is-expensive debate is overrated imo. I'm a PC guy, u have to realise that while u give extra money for pc, its not just a console, its much more and everyone knows it.

Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@capt'n:
omg, if only they re-release Shadows of the Collossus on the PS3. No need to change anything or add anything new... I'd buy it again in a heartbeat just to get te updated visuals. It's already a p-e-r-f-e-c-t game as is :D @abubakar: well, at the time when I bought my xb360 and ps3 ($400 each was it?) I had to spend about $1.5k to get equivalent performance (@1080p). I'm sure you can get a pc to do that for much less nowadays, then again the ps3 and xb360 has been around for quite a FEW years already. |

I think these days its pretty gud using pc as a gaming platform, its so cheap to buy graphics cards like amd's 4870 or GTX series from nvidia, pair them with any decent cor2 (doesnt have to be a $1000 cor2 or i series intel chip) and u have a very powerful system capable of awesome entertainment experience. But I do understand, microsoft and sony have both said that the current console generation is here to stay, and any one who buys their console is guaranteed to have a consistent gaming experience for years to come on the same hardware, where as your current pc system is going to require an upgrade within 2 years, a must. I still love the freedom of a pc though. Just a matter of choice I guess. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@abubakar: Yeah. In the end it all boils down to the kind of games you want to play..
japanese rpg : console euro\us rpg : pc (hmm, actually they're moving to console too) fps : pc (ok, i'm old school) rts : pc 3rd person action\adventures : console etc.. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
The price drop almost got me to buy one. I then saw this cute little lady called N900 and fell in love, so all my extra cash is going to "her" instead.
We have PS2, Wii, two 360's, two laptops and two gaming rigs at my house- that will have to do. Ironically, my favorite gaming device right now is the Dingoo. Plays all Neogeo games at full speed with sound (true) and cost $85 delivered. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
if anyone is wondering why I've been pretty quiet of late, it's for two reasons:
1/ I bought a PS3. 1a/ my original chipped Xbox (used mainly as a media player) was getting pretty tired and wouldn't play DVDs reliably 1b/ all the xbox games were getting stale 1c/ I wanted a PS3 which could run linux 1d/ there were some very good offers around with the changing model we have LBPlanet and Ghostbusters (free with console) I spent quite bit of time improving my web wrapper for get_iplayer so wife and kids can pick and choose iplayer programs to download for later playing. the ps3 plays flash streams just fine, but is too fussy on codecs so iphone downloads don't play. ---- 2/ my linux router/server died and I seconded my desktop computer, which suddenly became hopelessly unreliable and I'm replacing it with this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/12629882@N05/tags/jetway/ ---- 3/ I'm suffering n900 envy and I am worried about getting tempted and buying the new one. the n800 still works just fine. |

Anyway, shadow is the perfect game for 1080p and stereoscopic-3D. Half of the game is roaming the country side and to view this with depth would immerse you even more deeply into an atypically beautiful fantasy. I'd also like to play some good space shooters in 3D, and a good FPS in 3D as well while off the topic. :p But as far as gaming is concerned, I've got a soft spot for consoles. Though the line seems to be blurring more and more these days. Go on, ysss, recommend something you love. You and I seem to have similar tastes! }:^)~ |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@Capt'n:
Hehe i bought Ico after I finished SotC but never got around to play it through yet. I have a bunch of oldies 'in queue' for me to revisit one of these days :D I used to think PC Gaming > Console, but after I bought a bigger LED screen and a nice cushy sofa to go with it, then it's hands down Sofa > PC for gaming :D Space shooters in 3D... hmmm... have you played Dead Space? The story is pretty meh, but the environment, control, gameplay and animation are really good... Another game (not space shooter) that's pretty fun to play is InFamous on PS3. Storyline is not bad, but the gameplay experience (to me) is top notch as you play a super hero that roams freely in a GTA4-like city. Those kinda games are just fun to play, just don't forget to set your mind to 'story optional' mode ;) Oh, I've been playing a bit of Ghost Busters and Arkham Asylum on the XB360. GB is great in the sense that you get to 'hang out' with the GB crews and get to gawk (in first person) at all the cool environments worthy to be included in a GB sequel movie. Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray are the voice actors and there's LOADS of great banters during the off-action times to keep you interested :) Arkham Asylum is just a Batman game done right ;) Waiting to compare notes with you.. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@ysss,
You're my new hero. All I know is oldies, as I haven't been in the game for quite some time. But I miss it dearly, and am looking to plunge back in. Of course, I can't do it as diligently as I did before, not enough time, but I'd love to play some timeless titles. Arkham looks amazing (it's in 3D on the PC), and ghost busters just looks cool! I'd play it for the comedy alone. I'm a big fan of RPGs. Story is an important element for me, but so is conveyance of said story. This is one of the reasons I like ICO/SoTC so much! I wish I could suggest something to you, but I fear that you're way ahead of me. However, when I get into it, I'll let you know any beauties I come across or are recommended to me. Speaking of 3D gaming, I just came across this: http://www.diginfo.tv/2009/10/02/09-0305-r-en.php It seems that sony is taking steps to get into this market, but XB360 will have a much easier time with 3D content, as it should just be a DirectX upgrade. Either way, it's coming, and I'm looking forward to it. I seem to be the minority though, as comments on Engadget/Gizmodo/etc seem lukewarm on the whole 3D thing. Ah well, I think it'll be great. }:^)~ |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@Capt'n:
:D I don't think there's much technical hurdles for said 3D implementation on either the PS3 nor XB360.. I think it's still a matter of limited market interest\demand that's holding back mass adoption of this 'feature'. I love RPG :) But unfortunately most of them them take way way way too long to finish for most 'normal' people :D Btw, I'd recommend Mass Effect for a fairly recent RPG.. awesome environments and fun to play. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3

The Linux port for PS3 does not take full advantage of the hardware. Don't forget the new PS3 Slim does not run Linux. More info on Wikipedia. This makes XBox360 actually attractive because you can pirate games and hack Linux on it. The Wii is not really a contender because the hardware is far less powerful than XBox360 & PS3, and is aimed at different market segment. I think the advantage of a console is: 1) its an end solution you don't need to think about anymore. Just plug and play 2) all software is compatible; again just plug and play 3) Everyone has the same hardware, levelling the playing field more to skill and network latency. But to say it is cheaper... you cannot use it for much different purposes. If you'd go for some mid-range AMD processor, 4 GB RAM, ATI graphics card, and motherboard you have already a decent system. Only need a case and peripherals then, and you can use previous components to upgrade or keep in mind upgrade path during purchase, like PhysX or small SATA HDD you got lying around. And you get a lot of backwards compatibility. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3

Anyway, it's a guess that it'd be harder to enable 3D on older titles on the PS3. The reason is that with an exotic processor, like the cell, the software development would likely be anything other than 'conventional' and thus newer, less mature APIs. In this type of environment, I would guess (and it's only a guess) that features like stereo would be left by the wayside, and only features necessary for the game would be developed. Additionally, I would also guess that each game would have very unique foundations, due to the exoticness of the Cell architecture. MS does not have this problem as DX is very mature at this point. For newer titles, it would/should be no harder than current development on either system. On to more important things.... WOW! Mass Effect looks GREAT! Is it an FPS/RPG? Is there a mouse/keyboard for the XB360 (I need this to play FPS -- though I suppose I could learn to love the controller -- *shudder*)? }:^)~ |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
Hmm, even then, I think its rather easier to port a Windows/x86-32/DirectX game to XBox360/PPC/DirectX than PS3/PPC/OpenGL_and_whatever_else_necessary_to_replace_Dire ctX. If the game was never meant to use anything else than DirectX its gonna be hard to port, just like it'd be hard to port a game meant to run on x86-32 only. The time where games were developed on IRIX/MIPS/OpenGL and therefore portable to anything running OpenGL (and some degree, *NIX) are over.

Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@Capt'n: Oh right.. I've no idea what the development tools available\used on the PS3 :D I thought it's standardized through their official SDK, like directx.
But they did mention about 2010 availability for stereoscopic 3D converted titles... we'll have to see how it goes. Yes, Mass Effect is an RPG with 'soft core' FPS... I like how they maintain (reality) continuity between exploration and battles with the FPS interface. And the environments.. they're about the most beautiful, imaginative and expansive i've seen around (in space opera style ;) ) Unfortunately there's no keyboard+mouse control for the xbox360 but I played it just fine even though I usually LOATH playing FPS games with the analog controller. I think if MS lets games use keyboard+mouse control scheme on the XB360, it'll take away half of PC games market as you can hook it up to a PC monitor, put it on your desk and just have it beside your 'normal PC' for work. $300 for work pc, $300 for gaming on the XBOX360. Best of both world. |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@ysss
Ooooooh! I have to play Mass Effect! I'm a sucker for beautifully imaginative and expansive environments (to quote you word-for-word-for-word :p). I think this is one area that the improvement of graphics has had a significant impact. Anyway, I can learn to love FPSs on the controller, I used to hate mouse/keyboard when I first tried it! :D I'm also a fan of that 'space opera style' :p, with optionally included pretentious robots and stars of death. :D And mass effect 2 is just around the bend. I watched the trailer from this years e3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIpIgisDxo8 (do it in HD) I've just acquired a new laptop for the low low price of $0 (given to me by someone getting rid of it), so I can't justify the purchase of an Envy 13 at this point (although I really, really wanted it!). The good news is that I now don't have to spend the $2000CDN, and can re-appropriate those funds in other ways. I may pick up an XB360 in addition to the playstation slim. There are some games that I'd love to play on both! I'm really excited! Yeah XB360 could cannibalize the PC gaming market. I hadn't thought of that! Of course, the price of consoles has always been a compelling reason to choose this method for gaming over the PC. What I find interesting, is that it seems developers optimize more on the consoles due to static hardware. Although PCs are technically superiorly specc'd, console games can hold their own despite the *much* older hardware. And is it just me, or do console games tend to be more inventive as well? Perhaps this is less true these days... }:^)~ |
Re: Looks like I'm buying a PS3
@Capt'n:
Hehe, well here's an in-game shot to back my words up ;P http://masseffect.bioware.com/_commo...7_1280x760.jpg Btw, if you have played thru the first Mass Effect, your savegame will be used as the starting state for the second game :D Your character and stats will obviously be used, but on top of that, your past decisions will also be reflected in the new game. IE: You've to make decisions like saving\sacrificing certain team members and even romantic partners to involve with *G* Developer info about what's new in Mass Effect 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HX5bhyJaRs WTG on the notebook acquisition :D I find myself playing casual games more while mobile nowadays, if at all.. with all the other portable time-filling activities that can be done on smartphones nowadays (email, IM, irc, browsing, rss, ebooks, etc), 'serious' portable gaming just takes a back seat for me. And the pc setup doesn't do 'good games' mentioned above justice IMHO.. I mean, my pc screen ain't too shabby (24") but it just doesn't compare with enjoying games on a big screen on a sofa with 5.1 audio system. Just like watching movies.. And I don't enjoy 'tinkering' with my gadgets all that much now except to personalize them. I used to overclock, make registry edits and do driver swaps to eek up 10-20fps more on games, but I think it's just a rubbish way to spend people's time on. Console games are pre-optimized from the factory and all I need to do is just plop the disc in and start playing ;) |
