Apple iPad
Discuss.
I'm no Wordsworth, and i'd need to be to truly express my disappointment with the iPad. It seems to be to the iPhone what the DSi was to the DS - a lazy upgrade. |
Re: Apple iPad
10" tablet with a phone OS... Ingenious.
|
Apple iPad -- is that all it is? Huh.
No 3G, no webcam, no keyboard.
I just bought an Acer Aspire One (Atom N450) with keyboard, Windows 7, webcam, etc for $299. It is a GREAT PC. I don't know the price of the iPad, but it better not be more than $349, and even that would be pushing it at this point. We can all breathe a sigh of relief that Apple didn't do anything revolutionary here. One thing they do understand is how to to build a touch-based UI -- I wish other UI teams would learn from them. |
Porting maemo/debian on iPad?
no flash. no multitasking...
Do you think will it be possible to make it dual boot? |
Re: Porting maemo/debian on iPad?
As much as iPhone...
|
Re: Apple iPad
No 3G = no subsidy = fail... :) Unless it is $200 without one.
|
Re: Apple iPad
And to think that Nokia had, has?, everything ready for this market and decided to cut EXACTLY on that?!
Oh boy, it seems to me that those guys up there do not really understand how the technology world goes... I hope, better I beg, Nokia to release a damn tablet with M6. Forget that weird boklet monster and just go with a tablet. |
Re: Apple iPad
The thread "Porting maemo/debian on iPad?" with two posts has been merged into this thread.

Re: Apple iPad
no flash no plug ins for a browser on 10 inch screen = double fail
|
Re: Apple iPad
I wouldn't be too quick to say "no 3G"... otherwise, I'm totally underwhelmed. The ability to run iWork on the iPad though is a good point. But the form factor just... the bezel is huge.
|
Re: Apple iPad
Wud be rly nice with 3G. But w/o its so fcking useless imho.
But the Apple Fanboy's are gonna buy it for sure :) |
Re: Apple iPad
no multitasking = win
(at least for those who can not breath and read at the same time) |
Re: Apple iPad
So device that in their opinion is good for web browsing and is middle of netbooks and smartphones....... and you can't use flash. Tablet not having flash don't compute with me at all.

Re: Apple iPad
The iPad hardware itself doesn't float my boat - it's too big - but the seamless integration of services (which are already available, at launch) and the apparent slickness of the platform can't be denied. All those content publishers on board - nice.
The product launches, and the products themselves, only serve to highlight the gulf in quality that exists between Nokia and Apple. I'm not sure how much longer I can stand to remain a Beta tester for Maemo (it's been 5 years now) when Apple are able to churn out great - although sadly restricted - products with apparent ease. And they haven't gotten on to the next iPhone update yet... |
Re: Apple iPad
what is so special about that one?
why wouldnt i just buy something like this: http://www.archos.com/store/psearch....rod_id=archos9 |
Re: Apple iPad
Whatever it is... Nasdaq doesn't like it so far.
|
Re: Apple iPad
UPDATE - The Big Steve has just announced there'll be a 3G model. So it WILL be subsidized.

Re: Apple iPad
The no contract 3G is nice, but I still think that platform is still a minefield of doesn't...
Nice device, but I'd still rather have a tabletish n900... |

Oh boy, I can already see those people at the gym. Fully dressed with Nike gear and with the iPad attached to their arm. :P |

Re: Apple iPad
Jeez...all these post look eerie similar to all the post when the iPhone came out and clearly that product went nowhere!
|
Re: Apple iPad
Eheheheheheh…
What an ugly thing. It seems that history going in the wrong direction. I’ll not buy it for sure… |
Re: Apple iPad
I was just thinking too - I can't wait for someone to develop a ibook app that reads books out loud and have the publishers go crazy again. Then again Apple might block it, heh.
IAC, they are going to sell a pile of these things, $499 is a great entry point. |

Remember, Nokia have been beavering away on Maemo for 5+ years and many of the shipping apps still lack the most basic functionality, haven't been updated since the initial release in 2005 and/or lack sensible integration with the new phone functionality on the N900. Apple employ their own developers to create the best end user experience on their products, while Nokia outsource their development - it shows. |

that hurts :( |
Re: Apple iPad
Ah, they did price the base model below $500. Apple sales reps will be pushing the iPad at K-12 and higher ed for "computer for every student" use.
|
Re: Apple iPad
This is a massive failure and im gald it happen to them. Nokia if you hear this. ****in destroy them now. I hate Apple.
|
Re: Apple iPad
well, now they showed a keyboard dock...
now THAT is something nice.... |
Re: Apple iPad
Too funny, here at work there are two Apple fanboys that are completely salivating over this. "Only half an inch thick and lasts 10hrs!" I told them no flash no plugin, and their response "They'll have an app so you can watch videos, just like youtube one." I told them for something this large wouldn't a cheap front facing webcam be a game changer? "It's not a chat device, it's like a computer" Price points just came out and its laughable. This is a flop.
From Endgadget: starts at $499 for 16GB, 32GB for $599, and $699 64GB. Adding 3G costs a $130 per model, so the most expensive model (64GB / 3G) is $829. The WiFi-only model will ship in 60 days, and the 3G models will come in 90 |
Re: Apple iPad
heres the prices just posted
$499 for 16GB iPad. 32GB is $599, 64GB is $799. 3G models cost an extra $130. So $629, 729, and 829 with 3G. what f'ing joke ectra for 3G the first prices should be for 3G IMO its over priced without 3G |
Re: Apple iPad
for five bills...seems a bit under powered....maybe they were shooting for that standby battery hours....(ONE MONTH).....maybe it just start up very fast...
|
Re: Apple iPad
But seriously.... No multitasking???
Major Fail. This is more fail than nokia reducing screen size on n900! |
Re: Apple iPad
I can see a huge market for the iPad for students. Really easy to dribble down notes in class for example. I'm hoping Nokia will come out with something similar. Having M6 running on something like this would be awesome. Nokia should name it as Nslate
I might just buy a iPad if no other company provides something similar. |

I also have an Aspire One with Linpus - a cheap eBay extended battery means easily 8 hours battery life. The SSD-equipped one I had before this went for 12 with the extended battery. And was under US$300. It even looks more portable than that weird slab. |
Re: Apple iPad
So i missed the input... other than the keyboard is there any other way to take down notes?

Obviously my comments don't apply to everyone - many of the core platform developers are Nokia employs and on the whole they've done a very good job, but the whole package is let down by sub standard applications and integration of those applications with the rest of the system. Maybe the bugs will be fixed for Harmattan, maybe Harmattan will work on the N900, maybe Harmattan will be just another mess... it's a never ending list of "maybes" with Nokia and Maemo, is there an end in sight? Yes progress is being made, but by the time worthwhile progress has been made your current device is rendered obsolete and you have to upgrade to a new device to continue helping Nokia remain relevant - can I be bothered in future? Not sure I can TBH. :( |
Re: Apple iPad
oh apparently it uses micro sims whatever that is but it sounds like you locked out from using your own if thats some kind of special sim.
apple locking people down again to partners |
Re: Apple iPad
Is this "Apple A4" basically just a Snapdragon?
