Updating

Well since we are all waiting for the PR 1.2 release which in reality will probably be now big deal I was going to see if there are more apps to update.

Now when I click on update in the app manager it seems 3 catalogues are unavailable

Nokia Applications
https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/re...apps/./Pakages
could not resolve host: donwloads.mameo.nokia.com (Domain Name not found)

Nokia Sysem Software Update
https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/re.../mr0/./Pakages
could not resolve host: donwloads.mameo.nokia.com (Domain Name not found)

Ovi
https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com/re.../ovi/./Pakages
could not resolve host: donwloads.mameo.nokia.com (Domain Name not found)

Can anybody tell me what is wrong.

--------------
Also there seems to be an battery-eye 0.7 out but https://garage.maemo.org/news/?group_id=1292 telles me 0.6.6 is the newest. I would love to update battery eye over the app manager. Why is this not possible.

Thanks for your help
Markus

Those lines don't fit.
You either have
Code:

donwloads.mameo.nokia.com
in your configuration (where it should read downloads.maemo.nokia.com) or you misspelled the server name in the error message.

I suggest you check your App Manager configuration for typos.

What you are missing is that these are the repos already on the device. He has no need to configure the repo himself. They used to work for him now they do not. Something has changed somewhere along the line whether it be on his internet or Nokias' servers.

Pardon me, I'm not missing that those are the standard repositories. I most certainly have those on my N900 as well and they do work.

I still recommend he'll check the server names in his catalog list. That's the most obvious thing to do, given the error message he posted.

Several people have reported issues with these repos. Some say it's their internet connection, some say it's to do with the update thats "coming" one thing is for certain though, an address does not just magically change and put random letter configurations in them. So yes, perhaps he should check them but i'm sure as hell he won't find anything different.

@OP, sorry I can't help.

Sure, but that's a very broad statement.

As I was pointing out, the OP's error message does not match (at least what he believes to be) his configuration. Why - we don't know. He might have tried to tweak the repository URLs since he unboxed his N900. You know like - some people do. I did :)

So unless we know, this is the first thing to check ("App Manager" -> "Application Catalogs").

Now if those URLs are correct, we can go on and try more esoteric explanations like:

I agree with what you're saying and I don't want to start a debate/argument :D I just don't think that the amount of people that have reported the issue and say things like they haven't touched it would be lying.

Pal it was a typo! I will try it again and hopefully give you some rest

@AdnrewG
Thanks for backing me up. Kind of felt missunderstood. I am not tweaking anything.

Can any of you try to access: downloads.maemo.nokia.com with a regular browser?

No problem. We just had to make sure.

So the name of Nokia's repository server could not be resolved although (as we know now) it was spelled correctly. Which could be due to a number of reasons:
  • your aren't properly connected to the internet
  • your access point (e.g. DSL modem) does not resolve hostnames properly
  • your N900 does not forward DNS requests properly (AFAIK it runs a special daemon to forward name server requests - this process may have died).
Are you currently able to surf the internet with your N900? (I apologize if this sounds like a dumb question)

No, access seems to be restricted.

Access could be restricted to the App Manager application - I would not worry about not being able to browse the download directory with an ordinary browser, it's probably not meant to be.

Re: Updating

@BigLebowski

Yes I have internet access.

I tried it over wireless in my office, wireless at home and 2.5 G over the net. So I have different ISP at home and office so I would have different DNS serving me.

Also I can reach the page by normal browser in office which would mean I have the DNS resolving correct.

So the question is? Who can or cannot access these repositories from the N900 and from what country/provider.

Regards Markus

I'm not sure if I end up with the same conclusion. From what I understand now, your N900 can resolve any hostname, regardless how you connect to the internet, it only fails to resolve correctly when using the App Manager.

While it is certainly possible (ISP-wise) to block certain hostnames / domains from being resolved, it's far more likely that the App Manager on your device is to blame.

what do you mean by it gets stuck? is it giving you a error msg like "operation failed" or anything like that? what happens when it "gets stuck"

@OP, sorry I can't help.

a day or two ago i downloaded the latest fw. my app manager would not work. kept saying operation failed.i later discovered it was because i had these joiku repo's enabled. that issue resolved

next i noticed i could not connect to app manager using wifi. only when using the tmo internet connection.. here it is a few days later and BAM jus tlike that i am able to connect using wifi. i dont know why that hapened but i also dont care as long as it worked. hope this helps some bdy who is having software updates issues

also.. dont go crazy like i did becaus eafter a update you cant find your fav apps to re-download. remember some of them may have been downlaoded t= from the ovi store or came with your device and thus will not be in the repos or app manager like Bounce. you have to visit ovi stote to get those back.

and make sure your not using espejo mirror for repos... they dont have all the stuff that the official extras and extras-testing/devel have

I have the same problem. I just found a bug someone submitted about the same problem. So I linked the bug to this thread and here you get the link to the bug. Just to have all information in the same place.

Re: Updating

I still have the problem of the failed catalogues

- Nokia Applications
- Nokia System Software Updates
- Ovi

Could this acutally prevent me from getting pr 1.2?

Re: Updating

It turns out, that the bug I posted is a duplicate of this one:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7665

There I also found a workaround for the problem:

Use the terminal to edit the file /etc/resolv.conf. There you find the line 127.0.0.1 (which means somethin on the device handles DNS requests). Comment that line out and add any other DNS Server, for example CCC Berlin's 213.73.91.35 or google's open DNS server 8.8.8.8. So your resolve.conf looks like

Code:

#127.0.0.1
213.73.91.35

Restart you connection and everything should work...

Re: Updating

i typed in sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf into the xterminals but it asks me for the password and i googled what the password is but so far i read there is none so how do i even get to edit the resolv.conf, if i may ask?

gnutix 2010-08-28 16:03

Re: Updating

Here's the complete solution that works for me :

  1. Download and install rootsh directly from the Nokia N900.
  2. Open X-Terminal
  3. ~ $ sudo gainroot
  4. ~ $ vi /etc/resolv.conf
  5. Changed "nameserver 127.0.0.1" to "nameserver 8.8.8.8" (Google DNS)
  6. Press Shift + Z + Z (to save the file)
  7. ~ $ cat /etc/resolv.conf
    nameserver 8.8.8.8

Here it is. Now you can update and everything else.
