Homepage widget editor app
I'm so let down by the desktop (homepage) on the N800.
As I spend most of my day at my computer surfing the web, communicating, designing and listening to music I want the feel and look to be appealing. Nokia hasn't really thought the UI design through imho. NOTE TO DEVELOPERS/PROGRAMMERS: Would it be possible to create an application to edit widgets on the homepage, ie: changing it's size, colour and also set it so the user can choose for a widget to slide to the side of the screen and then form a little side tab which you then can click and it will slide back to it's original position. if not then is it possible to view the root directories and change the attributes like how on some phones ie: Sony Ericcson K750/W800i you can gain access to the root folders via a program and change the neccassary files. This is a MUST HAVE app, it will not only improve the devices look, but leave room for more developing. I just feel like everything is jammed onto the homepage and im sure other users agree in me saying that having a simple, clean and minimal looking homepage is better. |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
Cant anyone help with this problem??
I'm sure it's not that hard to program. |

I just started my entry level programing course and belive me if you do not have any kind of background in programing or at least the concept down you will be lost. |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
I just love when people who don't program comment on how easy it should be to program something.

but, I am one of those people who love my 800 (and 770 before it) but am becoming more perplexed than annoyed about why certain things that nokia could do software-wise aren't done. There's an app called "yellow notes applet" than does what the poster asks for above, and goes quite a way to answering my long standing hope of a quick access note file scrap on the "desktop" that can be accessed quickly and is configurable quite simply to size etc. Perhaps it has some code in it that could be applied elsewhere? For the app itself, it would be nice to be able to have multiples of it, and perhaps a quick launch icon instead of permanent presence on the desktop. |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
I have often thought of implementing something with an easily programmed interface for the 770/N800. I think something like Yahoo! Widgets (widgets.yahoo.com) or Google gadgets would be cool.
However, like TA-t3 said, this is NOT built into the Hildon framework. Like Yahoo! Widgets, this would be it's own interface system built as an application on TOP of Hildon. And that's why it's very tough to tackle. -F |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
The unfriendly comments from the two posters above were exactly what I was talking about when I posted a similar thread about two weeks back. Many of us are new here and do not understand the ins and outs of what it takes to make something work, especially in this environment. If you look at the level of hacking talk, one would think that anything is possible here and maybe wonder why it is not already done. I am sure not everyone here is an expert at everything but the level of unwarranted rudeness towards newcomers seems to be limitless. If the more advanced members can't be bothered with newbie questions then simply don't answer them and move on. Just because you have a particular expertise in the N770/N800 world does not make you an expert in say, military data satellite networks (my world), or any other field. If you want the N770/N800 to remain a niche market toy (that is really all it is for the moment) for developers, please continue to talk down to the new people here.

Taking a simple post to far... Not everything is handed to you in life specially when you make comments like the original poster did... It just sound rude when people is seeking for help and dont get a fast respond and start making comments like that... Is not simple if it was he wouldnt be asking right?!? I my self ask question when I can figure it out completle... A while back (About 5 Month ago) I ask for somebody to port pengupop I got no respond so I lefted at that... guess what 5 month later pengupop is ported :) Is just the princple programing is not simple it takes time and resources most of us have a life beyond this forum... So you cant expect somthing to be done fast... Belive me I meant no harm or bashing I was polite about it but again like I said is post like yours that pist the hell out of me.... And I understand... We where all noobs once and at some point we are noobs all over again. My 2 cents. |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
@SeRi@lDiE,
Dude, listen to what you wrote to a new guy in this forum. Taken to far? Mine is not the first nor will it be the last regarding some of the manners here. They guy was just asking a simple question like I have and others have, only to have their heads handed to them and made to look stupid for asking. Dude, why take this to the extreme level? I just do not get the point or reason for the sometimes "attitude" that new users get when they ask a question. Is this really necessary? Come on and lend your knowledge to the mix. If you can help out then do so. Your help and that of others is appreciated. |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
Look I am not going to hose this thread any longer... I am not trying to take it to the extrem just stating how I feal about your post... like I said I have no problem helping out others.
Thank You. |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
@sapporobaby: You see unfriendly comments where there are none. _PLEASE_ learn to read postings properly. To read messages in writing is to interpret the attitude behind, and it looks to me you're constantly mis-interpreting. Critique isn't attack, and "no" doesn't mean "bugger off". And this posting isn't written with an angry face either.

Re: Idea for a n800 app
I am going to have to stick with Serialdie on this one. It wasn't the first post that caused problems. It wasn't asking for new features. It was the idea that its "easy" why aren't you doing it. This kind of work is hard, and people who marginalizes it like that make fewer people want to do it for free. Its like someone saying "I want my car to be able to also be a boat. I have seen other people do it. How come no one has made my car a boat yet, it can't be hard"

Re: Idea for a n800 app
@TA-t3,
Don't you find it a bit strange that the original poster has not shown up again, just like in a few other threads where supposedly unfriendly comments weren't ushered? Anyway, whatever dude. I can read and speak english as my mother tongue. Maybe it was not your intention but it is how it came across. Anyway, it does not matter anymore as the originator of this thread has decided not to come back. |
Re: Idea for a n800 app
Which doesn't prevent you from rubbing it in some more, and generating more useless noise.

Your agenda seems to be how this place can be kinder and gentler to all who post. That would perhaps be better presented in it's own thread. Perhaps many would agree with you... In that thread. Part of the problem is not only are new users new to the N800, they are new to the Linux environment as well. However, I see that there now is a noob forum and that is a step in the right direction. *** Getting back to this discusion... Reread the OP's second post and think how you would react if someone who did not now the workings of military satellites sent you an e-mail ( C/C'ed to everyone else, BTW) that requested non existent feature from you and then stated that he was "sure" you could make it happen. |

Re: Idea for a n800 app
woah, I see there may be an issue with my post!
I can see why those first comments were made. Not really anything to fuss over Please note: Iam not a Noob lool nor someone with no brain My first post on the thread was basically a simple yes or no question, "Can it be done"? The whole reason I bought the N800 was because it was Open Source thus enabling the "Maemo" community to join together and help build upon the product. There is nothing wrong with someone asking a question. Our human body is designed to think and solve problems. I can understand the fustration other users may have with a comment I made like, "Cant anyone help with this problem?? I'm sure it's not that hard to program." as yes one may interprate that comment and look at it as someone being naive and damanding but it's quite the opposite. I was meirly wanting others to be open minded to the possibilaties we have to play around with. Like I said, it was a simple yes or no question. As if I knew it could be done I would then look into a way of developing an app. @SeRi@lDiE: you're saying "cheap shot" as if we are fighting one another, that's nice you're studying programming lool and...? if it cant be done then say so if it can be done then state it! if you aren't sure then agree and find out how! It wont make a difference whether I know C++, Delphi, or any other language, that was not the point of this thread. For programmers you people are very opinionated and emotional. "ohh some guy thinks its possible to do "X" LMAO! what a noob!.... yeahh.. now if you go back to when the Amiga was invented what was everybody saying?? it cant be done! etc then Windows came along! THIS IS LIFE! USE YOUR HEAD! dont close your mind just because "you" think something is impossible. How about do some research on the internet then come back to the thread and say, "Sorry bro, just cant be done for this reason! It's people like you that make these forums unenjoyable... like I said at the start, it isn't really an issue. I just got back from a 2 day meeting and saw what to me looked like a bunch of babies moping about some useless crap. Grow up! there is a reason why people ask questions!... |

WoW you aint a noob? You sure acted like one on your reply!!!! I had no bad intentions in my post to you just stating my opining. You are now talking S*** to people who develope applications for free? WTF is wrong with you! You aint paying for S*** here so if i a developer want to whine and B**** by all means let him!!! he is making applications for all of us to benefit FOR FREE!!!.... God you call somebody a noob because they said anything is possible...??? You are lame.... Bashing on somebodys positive comment... lame... You are just like the other guys who wants everything easy and done for them.... S*** you want me to hold your spoon while I am at it? Grow up? he look at your post first ... And the fact I stated that I am taking a course in programing to point something out to you and you reply that way.... That only tells me you are a child. With attitude like that.... Do the damn research your self next time... |
