Playing Bounce, Rally, on Nokia N8.

Here's a video of N8 running Bounce ported from N900, and a rally game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2orGMdWHrHY

N900 actually feels smoother, thanks to cortex A8.

Also notice the lame typical symbian... i don't notice any difference between it and S60v5

I'll give N8 a pass.

The rumored Broadcom chip pushes more plolygons than our Cortex A8. If anything isn't smooth, it is due to coding errors and not a lack of GPU power.

And where's the source to that rumor?

Here is the quickest reference that I found. Search the interwebs for Broadcom and N8 and you may find some more info.

yet another question : why are we talking about arm11 ? is the n8 based on it ? and what other phones/internet tablets are based on it ?

and...

couldn't we get the rally game ? =D

Symbian doesn't require much horsepower to run. So ARM11 @ 600 MHz is good (but not awesome for it). A top GPU, off course, is needed for video and games.

Why that combination? To save costs. For what is going to offer, the N8 is pretty good bang for your buck.

Thanks for the link.

Seeing Symbian does remind me how lucky we are on Maemo.

if the gpu is handling all the display stuff, 600mhz ARM 11 is plenty for a symbian phone. i think only the most recent nokia symbian phones have the 600mhz version, before that it was 434mhz I think

Ah, the usual self referential rumour. Note that there are also OMAP chipsets whose press releases called them capable of encoding h264 at 720p.

Is it supposed to be the flagship device? The N8? Are people gonna get suckered into buying this phone also? The phone seems like a mid-tier device with a really good camera. N86 anyone?

This 'flagship; talk is nonsensical really. Nokia produces a WIDE array of phone models and is constantly releasing new ones

I cannot find a single Nokia press release or even an official Nokia blog post that refers to a phone model as a flagship.

I can, though, google nokia flagship and see where through the ages, idiots have bestowed that title on all sorts of different phones, most recently x6, n97, 5800, n86, n8, n900, n97mini, e90 and on and on.

If anything, Nokia probably has several different lines with a range within each line. the way I see it right now Nokia has these lines:

messaging - e63, e71, e72 etc
imaging - n86, n8, n95
music - 5800, x6, etc
computer - n900, hopefully more soon :)

There is no point in Nokia having a single 'flagship' model, for some e72 might be the best device, for some maybe x6 is the best device, for others maybe n86 is best device

The only thing I was sure of was the processor being an arm 11 as stated in my old post. I backed it up with link to an official Nokia website.

And I clearly said I'm guessing about the GPU unit. The link given in regards to this is just the product page I speculated it to be, nothing more.

Re: Playing Bounce, Rally, on Nokia N8.

nokians on twitter have been saying its not the flagship device thats still to be announced.
remember the flagships for each range nokia offers will be N9-XX, C9-XX, X9-XX, etc. they made that clear when they announced new system, higher the number more top of the range it is, so N8 is next notch down on flagship ladder

Why's that? It looks very smooth if not smoother then the n900

I think this phone is going to be a winner for Nokia.

Re: Playing Bounce, Rally, on Nokia N8.

Why not port the rally game to N900??? We need more 3D games like Bounce is made of.

It irritates me that we don't have more proper 3d games yet like race/rally games.

Man that Symbian still looks boring.

Smooth, though! :) Now I find myself moved by the N8. I've moved from apathy to recognizing its existence.

We'll ot sure is it your flash what is causing the "nonsmoothnes" of the video but it looked really smooth to me. If that isn't smooth nothing is.

Bounce looked like it's running with higher framerates than n900. Probably becuase of lower resolution? Don't know. At least the gpu should be more capable (BCM2727 32M triangles/s vs. PowerVR SGX535 = 28 million triangles/sec). These are just numbers of course.

i dont want to go offtopic, but i dont think it deserves its own thread, so i'll ask here because its gaming-related as well:

since a few weeks ago there is a nokia x6-ad running on television. this ad shows the x6 running a need for speed shift-port on it.
is it ever going to come to the n900? i'd really love to have that.

Re: Playing Bounce, Rally, on Nokia N8.

Looks good so far. The main thing for me will be the HDMI port that for what i have seen and heard from people who got N8 proto is better than any other phone. Might or not be because of the rumoured broadcom GPU. Would make sense because as far as i know the TV out was Broadcoms main points with it's new GPU's?

I will either get some 400-500 euros Android phone or N8 to replace my Omnia HD. Then in Q4 i can hopefully replace my N900 with new MeeGo device. ;)

Other devices based on ARM 11:

The good old Nokia 5700 XpressMusic, Nokia 6120c Classic, Nokia E71, Nokia N76, Nokia N93.

Well Zune HD is based on ARM11(or you could say tegra is based on ARM11) and while it only had like 4-5 games when i owned it those games where as smooth as it can be and very good looking. Honestly people should stop staring the numbers too much.
