[Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1289324158

Available in extras-testing as tvkaista-fetch. UI is in Finnish, will translate if someone needs it in English.

You need a TVKaista ID, which is not free - see tvkaista.fi for the pricing. If you buy the service, you can download anything that has been shown on the Finnish non-pay channels in the past 4 weeks. There is currently a 2-week free trial period available for the TVKaista service. This client program is free, of course.

Features:
  • Requests and stores your TVKaista credentials.
  • Retrieves information about shows selected as Favourites on the TVKaista server.
  • Retrieves information about shows matching free text search items entered on the device. These keyword searches are persistent and can act as a local favourites list, separate from the ones on the server.
  • Can support two useful formats on the device (low-quality, mono audio or a 5 times bigger format that has better quality and stereo audio) as well as downloading the shows as original full-quality files which cannot currently be played by the standard media player, but could be played by some other program (mplayer) or external device.
  • Optionally hides reruns (see here for details on rerun detection).
  • Streams shows ("running man" icon in screenshot) - currently without support for YLE subtitles.
  • Downloads selected shows to the device for offline viewing.
  • Supports resuming and deleting cancelled downloads (partial downloads indicated by the "broken picture" icon).
  • Downloads subtitle files for those shows that have it (YLE) - this function still exists, but should not be needed since YLE subtitles are now "printed" directly on the picture by the TVKaista format conversion process.
  • Launches selected downloaded file in the standard media player ("play" icon in screenshot).
  • Resumes playback at the position you stopped at previously.
  • Cleans selected downloaded files, including subtitle files and partial downloads.
  • Standard storage directory is Videos, but can be changed.
  • Stores show information for the past 4 weeks, except indefinitely for shows with undeleted downloaded files.
  • Can filter the list for new or downloaded shows.
  • REMOVED AS UNSTABLE: Can start watching show while it is downloading.
OBSOLETE: to see the separate subtitles in the media player, install package "Subtitles Support", go to device Settings, scroll to the bottom, select Subtitles under Extras, check "Automatically load subtitle files" and set encoding to "Unicode (UTF-8)".

Please use this thread for feature requests and bugs.

(This basic information should have been in the original post; edited.)

Screenshots?
In what format does it save / capture the video?

TVKaista stores the normal digital TV mpeg-ts stream as is, then transcodes them to various other formats (http://tvkaista.fi/Info?page=viewingoptions). This client downloads the recordings as mp4, suitable for viewing on N900, but about 1/10th the size of the original recording.

Is it possible to support booxtv.fi ? It is cheaper than tvkaista.fi. They already promised to do Maemo version later, but I haven't seen it.

Based on their web site, it looks like booxtv tries to make money selling mobile clients that access their service, and due to that model they do not publish their API used to access the recordings. Thus they might be interested if someone made a commercial offer to develop a Maemo client, but I am not that someone, sorry.

Looks like there's a problem with feed date parsing if device UI language is Finnish. Will try to fix this today. Meanwhile, the workaround is to change UI language to English in the "Asetukset - Kieli ja alue" (requires reboot).

Thanks to Harri for spotting this.

Version 3-2 fixes the date parsing issue when using Finnish UI.

Currently this is a downloader only, i.e. need to download 100%, which has fitted my use model & high internet bandwidth.

But adding a streaming option should be trivial, will get back to you on this.

mikaelh 2010-09-08 15:07

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Version 6-1 in extras-devel now supports both streaming of shows that have not been downloaded (the running man in the updated screenshot) as well as "watch as you load" (very experimental).

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Few bugs/issues still with the latest (6-2) with following settings:

Language: English
Reginal Settings: Suomi

1) UI has mixed strings of both finnish and english. For example "Päivitä" should be update but then next it ot, there's "Searches".

Settings menu has "Käyttöoikeus".

And on app grid, application name is shown as "TVKaistan noutaj".

2) In "Käyttöoikeus" dialog, when entering any data, first field seems to be always automatically uppercased, minor issue when entering either ID or Password.

3) In few occasions, after entering account information, fetcher had stuck with notification "Testing connection .."

4) I do have few "seasons passes" in my account in tvkaista but pressing "Päivitä" doesnt bring anything into main view that i could download. Its just always showing "No information"

5) I have some keywords in "Searches", again, i'm not able to see any of the these as search results. Its just always showing "No information"

And suggestion:

Make the video format that fetched download as option that user can choose.

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Kiitos. Yes, it is a bit of a puzzler why strings with Nordic characters are not translated. I will put a bit more effort into this now that I know someone is actually using it in English.

From your description, I get an impression that you are entering your account information every time you start the program? (Should only ask for the information once.)

Tried the app with 2 diffrent accounts (mine and friend's) so yes.

translations and account input are minor points but i can't get really anything visible to download so atm. running the app on the xterm shows me that its the http connecction that fails: connection reset by peer.

Can we rule out poor network connection as the cause? Connection testing failing intermittently would point to that direction as well.

I just tried with the same version, same regional settings and a good wifi connection, with no problems.

As luck would have it, TVKaista had an unannounced service break today 11-14.

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Great app thank you.
Could you add option to download better quality too.

mrp 2010-09-15 12:36

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

yes, great app. Please add an option to choose quality, preferably in the preferences section.

By the way you can try TVkaista free for 2 weeks now. I'm making my decision based on these two weeks and experiences using "TVkaistan noutaja"

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Hi

I tried using the fetcher as I'm testing with the two weeks of free trial. Unfortunately I can't get past the login screen. When I enter my account name (contains ö letter), and my password, it just tells that "Tunnus/salasana ei kelpaa".

Any hints on how to get past this? Could this be because of the ö letter, or because the account name is too long (firstname.lastname)?

mikaelh 2010-09-16 16:12

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Most likely it is the ö. I think I will get a fix into the repository tonight - but you need to test it, because I only have my ID.

mrp 2010-09-16 16:18

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

I thought that the password is my gmail password as i connected my gmail with the kaista account. When I double checked tvkaista had given me a separate password sent to my email. You can later change that in web TVkaista interface

terje 2010-09-16 16:32

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Sure, just let me know when to test.

mikaelh 2010-09-16 18:08

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Hei, just checked and the username and password are encoded and the encoding works properly, so ä and ö should not be a problem. Long username probably is not the issue either, or at least mine is 14 characters long and is causing no problems.

If you did not already do so, could you check that you have the right username/password by going to the TVKaista site, logging out and manually entering the information in the fields at the top of the page? (I.e. do not use the Facebook/Twitter/whatever buttons.)

terje 2010-09-16 18:35

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

That's the first thing I tried - removed Facebook linking, signed out and logged back in. I naturally did it again now to make sure, and I re-typed both of them multiple times to fetcher. The account name and password are correct.

Any other ideas? :-I

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Ok, tried to go to http://alpha.tvkaista.fi/feed with a browser and log on with the account. Even that fails. Logging on via tvkaista.fi main page works.

Might be a problem in tvkaista. I sent them an email.

terje 2010-09-17 09:31

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

The problem was in TV-kaista. They removed the ö from my account name and now tvkaista-fetch works. Thanks for the help!

Go to the tvkaista.fi site and click one of Facebook, Twitter etc. buttons at the top. By connecting your TVkaista ID to one of those services you get 2 weeks for free. Please note mrp's comment earlier that you need to use the ID/password tvkaista emails to you, not the ID of - for example - Facebook.

mikaelh 2010-09-20 14:34

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

For those who requested video format selection: which formats are you most interested in, and why?

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Anyway, version 7-1 now in extras-devel has the option of selecting better-quality h264 as the download/streaming format. Files take more than 5 times as long to load, but the picture quality is noticeably better.

The smaller format seems to work ok for streaming over 3G.

There is also the option of selecting the original MPEG2-TS format, but that is intended for special purposes only, because the standard Media Player does not play it, mplayer does not support subtitles, picture quality is not visibly better than h264 when viewed on N900, and downloading takes about 2 times as long again.

Short poll! Pick one feature that you would most like to see included:
  • Subtitles with streaming
  • Ability to resume playback at the same spot where you left off, even if you have closed Media Player
  • Ability to resume partial downloads

terje 2010-10-01 17:12

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Resume playback would be great.

mikaelh 2010-10-07 19:11

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Version 8-1 now resumes playback.

Thanks to Python guru Thomas Perl of the gPodder fame for the relevant code.

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

my wishlist:

better error handling and reporting
integration of connection manager

and last, maybe a support for flash downloads for even faster downloads - that is, if theres reliable way to play the flash versions.

And i thought theres already a support for season passes but atleast the ones i have tagged in tvkaista do not show in the fetcher.

mikaelh 2010-10-08 13:31

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

"better error handling and reporting" - I can understand the need, but do not expect significant improvements, because this is a load of work without actually adding any new features. So, right now I just recommend a stabe network environment when updating and downloading.

"integration of connection manager" - can you please explain this a bit, I do not understand what it means

"support for flash downloads for even faster downloads" - yes, implementing this is a matter of uncommenting one line, but I do not like providing useless options, so I am waiting for flv's to become playable first

"season passes do not show in the fetcher" - yes, season passes were where this whole application started, so they definitely should work.

Debugging checklist:
- do you get any programs listed on the main screen?
- when you update from the server, are there any errors?
- after update, are the shows shown on the left side of the "Haut" page?
- can you check that the specific show you expect to see is listed normally on the TVKaista web service (on PC)?
- can you try changing the format to original ("Alkuperäinen"j, and see if that helps? TVKaista has problems with conversions at times, and I have added code to survive most of them, but...

mikaelh 2010-10-14 15:21

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

Got fed up with the many weekly reruns (uusinta) of some of the shows I am following, and implemented an option in version 9-1 to hide the reruns. As the feed from TVKaista contains no show IDs that could be used to identify reruns, application uses the following heuristic:

Show is a rerun if the name is the same and the show description is 95% same as the description of a previous show. Unless the shows are within 4 hours of each other, in which case it is most likely not a rerun but a longer movie that has for some reason been split into parts by TVKaista.

This option is by default not enabled.

I missed that poll. Is it difficult to download subtitles file before streaming starts to get streaming with subtitles work?

mikaelh 2010-10-19 14:18

Re: [Announce/Finland] Download client for TVKaista (IPTV)

The problem is that I do not know how to make the player understand a situation where the video and subtitle files are not in the same local directory, with identical names. Will dig a bit deeper - any help appreciated.

In other news, the rerun filter is a bit broken, so recommend leaving it off until further notice.
