You can't hide the shortcuts from within MeeFolders yet. I will add that feature later. :) The problem is that it requires root access.

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

Awesome! Wasn't sure exactly how this was going to be done, but this seems to be almost the official way. Just the apps not disappearing when added to folders really being the only difference.

Wont matter much as long as you put the folders on top of the app screen.

Great work except the one main thing that I would use it for is Bookmarks, which it seems not to be able to add unfortunately.

Holy snap! You used that icon!?

I feel great via proxy through your hard work Marxian.

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

Does this not replace stock app screen? If not, its no better than the other app made... Im really hoping that you will make it a replacement.

Edit: I see how it works now... A couple of suggestions though: once an app is added to a folder it should not show where it was before. Also once you go into a folder theres no quick way of going back. Plus, can we change folder names?

Maybe it doesn't require root access at all, if the N9 follows the freedesktop.org standard well enough.
Look at the menu editor for GNOME. It can hide system wide icons for particular users. Maybe it works the same on the N9.

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

Hello, I'm coming from the iOS community but I'm happily about to learn about maemo/meego.

MeeFolder looks really good! I started to work on something like that - with moving .desktop files to folders in MyDocs while deleting them out of use/share/applications. This way they disappear from the main icon grid and I can make them show up in my app. But being new to QL and the hole maemo/meego harmattan thing, I'm having my problems to make it work as an application and also a hard time with root/aegis and so on...

Also lack of time makes it impossible to work on such a project right now. So I'm happy to see MeeFolder, although it doesn't unlisted apps (yet?) from the main-grid. MeeFolder could really become a "killer-app" :) Most people are looking for something like that.

I also was working on the appearance of the project like folder icons.

@Marxian: Let me know if you could use them. I made them in Photoshop and Illustrator after the rules of Nokia Icon illustrations and they can be modified in any way (form, colors etc). Every folder could also have it's own folder-icon (games, docs, etc). My example just uses the general 4-square-application icon (as found in settings/applications). So this way media apps could be stored in a purple/pink Media folder, Navigation apps in a green Nav-Folder etc… Hope you understand my logic behind :)

Here's an example:

Let me know if interested :)

Those icons look great. I would very much like to use them for the folders. :) It would be great to have a different folder icon for each folder.

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

One immediate suggestion for improvement: if you open a folder, then open an app, the folder sub-app disappears. This is good, and 'correct' behaviour. However if you swipe the sub-app away to get back to the main app screen then it doesn't disappear but remains in the background. Indeed, if you open the sub-app again there will be two of the same sub-apps open in the background! You can potentially open an unlimited number.

Also, if you swipe the sub-app down to close it on purpose, it does close, but you are left in the open-app view instead of back at the main app screen.

The best solution would be for the sub-apps to check whenever they are in the background, and close themselves if so. They basically should never be open and in the background.

There is also a slight delay when opening the sub-app 'folders'. Any way to speed this up?

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

Another few comments (sorry to be monopolising the thread here).

Anybody who wants can easily disable the icons they have put in folders by going into /usr/share/applications and (as root) renaming the corresponding .desktop file (AFTER putting the app in the folder) to something else, e.g. skype.desktop to skype.desktop.off. That won't affect the visibility of the icon in the folder. Of course this requires you to be comfortable with command line, modifying system files, etc, and I am sure Marxian will get around to implementing this automatically quite soon.

Feature request: I would like to modify the names of the Folders, *and* the names of the applications I've moved into folders. Where are the files located that will enable me to do that? I tried adding a new .desktop file in /opt/meefolders/desktop but it was ignored by the Meefolders app. EDIT: I found a workaround. I can change the names of applications by editing the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications BEFORE adding them to the folder, and I can change the names of the folders by editing their .desktop files in /home/user/.local/share/applications AFTER creating that folder.

noetus 2011-12-18 16:35

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

Some more updates/comments.

It appears only icons from /usr/share/applications appear within the Meefolders application itself for adding to folders... none of the icons from /home/user/.local/share/applications appear, e.g. web shortcuts added by the user. Can you add these too (except the icons Meefolder itself adds there, of course). EDIT: I found a workaround for this, too. I can copy any .desktop files from /home/user/.local/applications to /usr/share/applications I want (this requires some messing with permissions though), then add this to the folder I want, then delete the newly created .desktop file in /usr/share/applications (doesn't affect what I put in the folder).

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

@noetus

The next release will address most of your requests. :) I don't think I can do anything about the slow launching of the folders. It involves launching a QML application, which will always take a couple of seconds. I am using the qdeclarative-boostable to speed it up as much as possible, as well as keeping the QML as lean as I can.

Can we arrange app icons in our own order?
What timeframe do you need for integrating the removing part of apps that are placed in folders?

The application icons are ordered according to when you add them. You can change the order by re-adding them in a different order.

I'm not sure about the hiding of .desktop files. I haven't yet found a way to do it as user. The only method I've found hides all .desktop files, not individual ones.

Re: [Announce] MeeFolders - Sort your N9 applications

Brilliant work Marxian!

OK, so you might notice that if you have Opera installed and you move it to a folder, the icon disappears and the name changes to something else too. This happened with the "other app" for custom folders too so I suspect some weirdness with the opera install. I got some strange results when I tried to modify the operamobile.desktop file so instead of that I just created a new one (I called it opera.desktop) and disabled the old one:

Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Opera
Comment=Mobile Web Browser
Exec=operamobile
Icon=/usr/share/icons/blanco/80x80/apps/operamobile.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Web;

I modified the opera icon to be a squircle one to fit in with the rest of the icons, and while I was about it I did the same for the Firefox icon. These are the only two that don't match the Harmattan theme I have on my phone. Here they are in case anyone wants to use them:

What about having all the folder-apps open on the startup of the phone, but invisible on the app view screen, becoming visible and then invisible when needed rather than starting up and shutting down?

I don't even know of it is possible to hide apps from the app view screen, but it must be somehow.

Since this is just a stopgap solution until PR1.2, you could just provide instructions on how to do it manually. If people can figure out root access to their phone it's not hard. The steps don't even involve very much typing, and could even be done from the phone's own terminal screen, though it would be a bit tedious for a large number of icons I suppose.

Just remove the .desktop file by entering

Code:

rm /home/user/.local/share/applications/meefolders_social.desktop
There can't be any items related to it, since the old database is deleted and a new one created in a different location.

tryin' to remove some shortcuts from the desktop ( once they are in my fav folder :D ) but some weird appz like the " drivin map" is hard to find ( strange name in /usr/share/applications )
Do you copy the shortucts put in folder somewhere ? would be easier to find all shortcuts alreay on created folders

Thanks ;)

Ok great! I will make a usable .png of the one shown earlier and work on some more. Since it's soon christmas time it might take a lil bit, but it will be a pleasure to draw them :)

I didn't find out how to send private messages, so could you please send me a mail to c4_info[at]yahoo.com ? This way I can send you the files.

damn, renaming "shortcut.desktop" from /usr/share/applications after adding them to a folder is not working.
I choose one app in its folder, the folder screen is closing and then nothing, I'm on application menu and my selected app is not lauching.

of course, renaming the sortcut in /usr/share/applications to original name make the app working again but .. :/

This is how my menu looks like now, THANKS!

I attached a zip file with the icons.
The icons are taken from the N900 shared hildon icon folder.

I also added a transparent icon. Just add an app in it to make it appear. Just use a space as the name of the icon.

Note: If you want to add a second transparent icon, you need to give it a different name, you can bypass this problem by giving it "2 spaces" as a name, and so on..

I've done it 8 times now which gave me this result:
(I like the portrait mode how the last icons only shows the half, which means you know that you can scroll down for more)
