N9 "Device not working properly"
Hello guys, and once again my N9 seems to bricked and again it's after setting an alarm and turning it off last night.
I didn't change any settings, didn't install anything at all. Just set an alarm for 7:45 and turned it off. Now when i try to turn it on it gives me this message: http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg846...pg&res=landing Any ideas what to do? |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Are you ready to go into open mode?
then we can fix malf state! edit: has it had a few reboots in a loop? edit2: http://wiki.meego.com/N950/Fixing_MALF_state |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
yep i got it into the open mode, then I got the Nokia logo with a wrench below it and nothing(waited 2 minutes), so i turned the phone off and it came back on(as it's plugged to the pc) and the same message came on. Am i doing something wrong?

Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
what you did was rd-mode not open mode ;)
open mode is that horrible warranty void message you get at every boot-up although it can be disabled from regular mode first... in your case it might be worth to follow the link in my eariler post and see if you need help on any of the steps :) |

Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Well you can use any compatible kernel (i.e. n950) on the n9 and it just puts it into open mode (i.e. disabling the a** that is aegis :D)
Its tried and tested so don't worry... |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
ok and last question will a virtual debian machine work for this? as the commands are interminal
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
yup a virtual debian machine should do the job too...
Just make sure the usb port gets detected in the VM and you are good to go... |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
i feel so stupid does the debian flasher "flasher_3.12.1_amd64.deb" which i just downloaded have to be installed?
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Yes you are using 64-bit right [as the flasher you have downloaded is 64-bit]? Just double click on it and if you are using Ubuntu it will open Ubuntu Software Centre to install it...
if you do it via terminal just dpkg -i /path/to/flasher* flasher gets integrated into the system unlike windows so you won't have to cd to flasher's directory after installation just need to cd to where the kernel and initrd are downloaded to [most likely /home/USER/Downloads/]... |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
how to gain the superuser privileges on debian machine? (i really need to learn how to use terminal)
[edit] got it installed, proceeding with the guide now |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
sudo su ;)
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
hmm it seems that connection to my N9 fails using virtual machine
[edit]i'll just use my dads Ubuntu laptop |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Any particular error you are getting?
Anything familiar in here: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...3&postcount=10 |

Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Oh then maybe use a livecd or wubi to get the job done...
Edit: If you google it you should be able to get the usb detected in the VM...Its relatively simple...If you feel it uncomfortable however, just use a livecd or best solution is to use wubi... |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
well i got working on my dads laptop i am at the
$ sudo flasher --load -k vmlinuz-2.6.32.20112201-11.2-adaptation-n950-bootloader -n initrd.img-rescue-2.6.32.20112201-11.2-n950 --boot 4. Insert the usb cable. part All done now my N9 is displaying a Warning message saying i have modified it. but this part is not working : 5. Wait about minute until a new USB mass storage device appears on the host. You should now have three partitions: /dev/sdX1 with is MyDocs, /dev/sdX2 which is MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan rootfs, and /dev/sdX3 which is the MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan home directory. |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Ok after the warning message you need to wait for some time for it to be detected as removable media...it can take 2-3 mins for the detection...also are using ubuntu or?
Edit: Don't progress to the next step just let me know once its detected as removable media...you should have three drives; rootfs, userfs, Nokia N9 |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Yes i am using ubuntu, and it's been around 9 - 10 minutes now
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Oh ok can you plug out your n9 and try booting it up...The warning message on device warrnty void stays there for around 10-20secs so dont panic...
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
here is the terminal output:
Code:
kristina@kristina-WIM2210:~/Desktop$ sudo su update: so i unplugged the N9 and plugged it back in and now i am getting the old Device not working properly message |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
the output is as expected...
Edit: so you will have to repeat the earlier steps and wait for it to get detected as removable media before proceeding with the next steps... if it doesnt get detected after 5mins in terminal run: Code:
fdisk -l |

And thank you for helping me out again :) i really appreciate it |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
any progress?
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
ok after fdisk -l
Code:
root@kristina-WIM2210:/home/kristina/Desktop# fdisk -l |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
your n9 is simply not being detected o.O
Let me see what could be a plausible solution for it... |

Well that would have to be done if we can't get it detected...If you don't have much to lose from a re-flash then might as well re-flash... Edit: There is nothing i could get on why the drives are not detected even though you get a success after entering the commands...I lose :o..A re-flash has to be done... |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
well it's charging now battery was at 4% and then it re-flash
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Oh s***...Its the same error as before...You don't need to re-flash...Just plug it out once it reaches 10% battery life and plug into a wall-charger...Stupid of me to make you do the fix MALF state steps when it was the same battery emptied error as last time...
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
but why did it give that error this time? Previously it was just stuck in a boot loop
[sorry if i don't reply i need to go for a bit, i'll continue the charge later] |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
If the battery is emptied and if you attempted to keep switching it on then that error pops up once a certain number of tries fails as the system thinks it has re-booted too many times...

Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Ok it's at 8% now i'll let you know how it goes. Is a common thing or should I stop using Alarm Clock all together?
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
You shouldn't stop using Alarm Clock at all...Just make sure your battery is quite filled when you switch off at night...At least over 50%...Or just keep the phone switched on...You can use Profilematic to customize rules too so that you are not disturbed till your alarm rings or simply put the phone in flight mode...
The surprising thing is I haven't come across anyone else having the same issue so just do the above and you should be ok... |
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
well did 10% it gave the warning and now the same thing, so it's time to flash!
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Yup too bad...flashin time...
|
Re: N9 "Device not working properly"
Well done and it worked now how to turn off the rd-mode???
