DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
Good to see others porting good rpgs. I'm kind of just porting python games right now and found a simple rpg called DragonHunt that only takes up around 1.3 megs installed.
More info and screenshots from original developer's site here : http://emhsoft.com/dh.html I had to disable sound (maybe someone can tell me why mixer.init fails), and it runs full screen at 640x480 (i tried 800x480 but there was annoying screen refresh issue). There were two campaigns in original (Dark Ages and Dragon Hunt) but i removed Dark Ages because the load times were veryy long... it did appear to have more in depth story though so if anyone is interested that campaign can be made available. There is a delay when entering buildings... just walk into doors and wait while interior loads. The FullScreen button on top on Nokia is mapped to inventory... Fullscreen, dpad, dpad enter, and esc are all the keys you should need. You can save game too with on screen buttons... but there is just one save kept... be certain you want to overwrite before you do. Setup package here : http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFi...-1.0.0.all.deb |
Re: DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
So far so good. If you can make the Dark Ages campaign available as an optional dep package install, that would be cool.
Not a bad game...slow as hell when starting out though. |

Looks really good work there. One problem I found is that you can't bring up the virtual keyboard to change your characters name.

Hi, seems like you need python first installed - which I can seem to do ... yet.
I asked for help here: Quote:

Re: DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
Did you click to install the base repository link (link above install python) before clicking to install python. Problem is packages in one repository can depend on packages in a different repository. Installing the base repository first allows the subsequent (main) installer to find bits and pieces across its newfound expanded repository-territory.
If thats not it, then : Uninstall all python programs (like dragonhunt, etc), -then- uninstall python itself. If during the uninstall process, programs still depend on it it might not uninstall correctly. Then make sure you have this repository in your application catalog : Web address http://repository.maemo.org/ Distribution mistral Components free non-free (Even though you are running gregale, it seems this http://maemo.org/community/wiki/appl...746c1b70fda281 page indicates thats the repo you want) Then try installing python again. If it still doesnt install you might need to uninstall any suspected python apps and -then- uninstall python. Python is usually the first thing i install because of dependency issues. If its really stopping you from using other programs, reflash then install base repo link and then python link from the python page. |

Wow - thank you! I think I will get it. I'll post when I do.

Re: DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
Dont think so, i'm not sure how python -binds- to libraries either.
So even if i could build the library, i dont how i would get python to see it (bind to it). |
Re: DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
Wow this game is awesome, kind of reminds me of the Kyle's Quest 2 stuff I played on my Palm a while back. About how long is this game? Also, I agree, any extra optional levels would be great.
Please, keep the games coming, there aren't enough good ones for the internet tablets. |
Re: DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
First of all, thank you so much for the port! The IT is perfect for these small games. I wish/hope more RPGs get ported.
NOW my question, is there an obvious end to the game? I think I completed the quest yet, I'm not sure if I'm done. No one said thank you or congrats...nada. *** *** *** *** SPOILERS AHEAD!!***SPOILERS AHEAD!!****** ok, what are the crystals for? I killed the 3 big dragons. now what? |
Re: DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
Sadly i gave up on it at that same point. Ran out of stuff to try although there was still an area i couldnt get into (missing key) so i was thinking it had something to do with that.
I suppose the author could be contacted at his address at bottom of this page : http://emhsoft.com/index.html Then again, there is a possibility the game just doesn't end well (or at all) :( |

Just so you know, Dark Ages is a port of the (DOS) game of the same name (with the author's permission), and is MUCH larger than the Dragon Hunt module. Dragon Hunt "ends" when you kill the large dragon in front of the portal. The crystals give you a slight boost in battle; they are not important to the story. (Basically, Dragon Hunt is an demo of what is possible with the engine.) Regarding speed, you'll be in much better shape if you can get Psyco working. Regarding the keyboard, try starting your game in windowed mode, entering your name, save, then change to fullscreen. I don't have a tablet, but that should remove most weirdness regarding keyboards. Also, regarding resolution, you'll need to mess with main.py, lines 38-39. 800x480 would be 25x15 tiles. I don't know what other issues this generates, though. Finally, there is actually no sound in the game right now, so you're not missing anything by disabling sound. (I don't remember why it's trying, though.) Anything else? |
Re: DragonHunt (Simple/Small Install RPG) ported to Maemo
Thanks evilmrhenry! Although dragonhunt didnt seem to end for me it was very fun playing through it. The mechanics seemed all there.
Is Dark Ages the full game? Although i made a build of Dark Ages, it would take way too long to load... like 5 minutes to load setup a new game. Would psyco help load times? I just reinstalled Dark Ages so i'll see if it plays otherwise well after the long load time... and ill release it if would be good continuation. It looks like you have quite a few good games which could be ported to maemo. If i get some free time i'll try a few more, or maybe someone else could take a shot at porting some of them :) Thanks for your port, was a fun 'learning' experience for python... well that and wanting to slay dragons with my newly upgraded flame sword ;) |

Yes, Psyco will help load times, both when starting the game, and when entering new areas. Endgame: Singularity should work well. It's more "mouse" driven than Dragon Hunt, so as long as tablets work the way I think they do, the game should be well suited to the format. Killer Steam-powered robots should work alright. It's a bit less processor intensive than Dragon Hunt, though it is real-time. Nothing tricky library-wise, though. Monster's Tower might work, but it's 3D, which will likely cause trouble. Bit on the small side, too. |
