Android in 3D
It looks as though Android is being taken into the 3rd dimension.

I wonder if that isn't similar to the display they'll be using in the 3DS, IIRC it's a Sharp display in that as well.
Personally all 3D stuff right now is a gimmick, and these glasses-free displays are the only real way to make it not suck (but even then, these have a super narrow viewing range.) I'd be hard pressed to buy in regardless of the OS, since it's just not that big a selling point for me. |

Re: Android in 3D
I don't understand people who dont like 3d, Ive had a 3d setup on my PC sense the years of CRTs and shutter glasses. And when its done properly 3d Is a very engaging experience, Dont think about 3d as things fly out at you, its more like looking out a window.

I'd be interested to try these out before even considering buying. But it's interesting that Android/iOS are pulling a lot of hard-core console developers away from consoles. Dedicated handheld systems may become something of a rarity in lieu of these 'superphones'. I think that 3D is a gimmick, to a similar degree of adding colour to BW is a gimmick. Now granted, adding colour is a larger leap, but it has few purposes that couldn't be accomplished adequately with BW. Still, despite it being a gimmick, in my eyes it's a welcome one. I think 3D provides a more intimate experience with what's being displayed. Nothing that can't be accomplished with good artistic direction, but augments the emotional response of the watcher. A good horror would be *that* much more frightening in 3D -- of course a good horror, like the G-Spot, exists only in conversation :D. With this type of a device, the screen tech is perfectly capable of 2D renderings, which means that those that prefer 2D can have 2D. But I would be very interested to see whether users choose 2D gaming in the market given the option of 3D. |

- Special glasses, which sit weird when you wear glasses already like I do. - No real compensation for when you aren't sitting inside a narrow arc in front of the display. More drastic in the case of displays like the one pictured (and in the 3DS) but still a problem. - Tradeoff of image quality vs. 3D. Since you're effectively needing double the framerate, this tends to necessitate cutting down on scene complexity (games) or resolution (video) to pump up the framerate. This seems to be going by the wayside as computing power creeps up, but it'll strain your system if you want to run at anything higher than 720p for some things. - New hardware, such as a 120(or 240) Hz display which I have no interest in buying while my current stuff works. |
