Synaptic crashes during software install. Frustrating
After purchasing an Arduino, I attempted to install the Arduino IDE in Easy Debian. I enabled the squeeze repositories and selected the package "arduino" (which obviously grabbed a lot of dependencies to).
After about 250MB of dowloads the installation starts but my N900 hard resets at around 50%. The next time I load Synaptic I am greeted with an ominous message screen instructing me to run the "dpkg --configure -a" command to fix my dpkg cache. The command returns an error message, and I had to reinstall Easy Debian. After 3 attempts with the same result, I figure I must be doing something wrong. Please help, it's extremely tedious constantly reinstalling the image for ED. :( |
Re: Synaptic crashes during software install. Frustrating
I am trying to install this now and if I have success I will inform and if I have any problems - I will help with how to fix.
Edit: I have got to 96%'ish and now received a bunch of 'Failed to fetch" but no other major errors. Apt-get still works as it should.. Oh! You said you were using Synaptic!! Either way - Same thing. It's due to missing files or something similar (debian servers), not easy debian or Synaptic. Edit v2: I'm not sure if you have the same problem I now have. But the solution I have is: Open the Easy Debain Chroot icon (In applications) and type: Code:
"sudo apt-get install arduino --fix-missing" Edit v3: I have the Arduino GUI running in full. There is nothing wrong with it. A few missing files maybe. Do what I wrote - You could always press the thanks button :) |
Re: Synaptic crashes during software install. Frustrating
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I will try this when I get home.
Although it doesn't explain why my phone reset itself rather than just giving me an error message I will post back results :) |
Re: Synaptic crashes during software install. Frustrating
Thanks but the same thing happened again
Is there a limit to the amount of apps you can install in debian? It resets my phone every time after about half way through (30 mins) the installation. So any more suggestions? |
Re: Synaptic crashes during software install. Frustrating
Well, it of cause depends on the fixed size of the easy-debian image.
Just install some of the libs and clean the cache from time to time [apt-get clean], may be you even have to get rid of some applications also [apt-get purge ...], that are not essential for you. |

Is there any way to increase the size of the image. MyDocs has plenty of space so it's not a problem |
Re: Synaptic crashes during software install. Frustrating
I have tried to get mine to crash. It doesn't.
Anyhow - as mentioned, clear your apt. Open chroot (icon) sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get purge sudo apt-get autoremove Then try again with the arduino help I mentioned. If it crashed again, post in the 'ALTERNATIVES' sections. You will find more help with easy debian. |

EDIT: The only package removed by these 3 commands is libdrm, which only frees up about 467kb. I doubt this will make a difference. |
Re: Synaptic crashes during software install. Frustrating
The only logical reason I can see for your reboots is if you are overclocked/undervolted.
I keep my N900 severely overclocked/undervolted, and usually it lasts for many days without reboot, but every once in a while if I run a task which is too CPU intensive it will crash. |

This is getting really frustrating, particularly as it seems other people are able to install this package. Do you think it's worth trying a different image? I'm currently using debian-m5-v3d.img.ext2 |
