My point is your paying for GPS in n810 and it is crap.
Asus EEE was $130 less and performs better at browsing.
I have a Garmin Nuvi so EEE without GPS is not issue.
I wanted a second GPS source...

I too decided to buy n810 because of GPS capability.
However after trying 2 units and having very slow results locking on I decided to return.
I feel if you are paying for a feature it should work....

My whole point to this thread was to advice in my opinion that GPS is weak in this device. If you are looking for True GPS buy a good stand alone unit.
My Garmin Nuvi 350 will find location indoors...

How would explain unit getting lock on within 1 minute placed in southern facing window twice one night but next morning in same window not seeing anything for 5 minutes?

Keyboard was always open when I tried GPS.
I made sure of that because of how GPS is in upper left corner.

This was a second N810 .I returned the first because I thought that had a defective GPS.
As I stated above it did lock in quickly twice the previous night.
It was placed in same exact window next...

I decided to return N810.
Couldn't justify $479 for GPS feature that has issues.

Last night I put unit in window facing south and it actually got signal with 1 minute on two trys.

I just checked internal memory it it was down to 399 meg.
Unit is a replacement from my original because of GPS issue.
I have not installed anything yet and can't figure out how this could occur....

I think you are correct about antenna placement being the issue of bad performance.
Nokia should have done a better job of designing a product that was to compete with stand alone GPS units.

I also agree that GPS is a big disappointment.
In my opinion Nokia should have left GPS feature out of this model.
They should have included more memory,slightly larger screen and faster processor....

I just took second unit I exchanged for today in Car.

It took about 4-5 minutes to lock onto Satellites and found my loction.
Placed unit on passenger seat and...

How long does it take now after first lockon?

Anything over 2-3 minutes is not acceptable.

I am wondering if receiver is under powered.
Once Nokia comes out with updated voice...

My first one was bought 2 weeks ago.
I wasn't playing with GPS untill a few days ago and noticed problem.
My 14 day return was up today and...
