Yes, the N900 is geeky enough, but it is painfully restricted in its root partition, so it is missing a lot of less-used utilities by default. Most can be downloaded from the repos, and even the crippled busybox shell can be replaced with a full bash shell. Anything you still find missing? Help out by compiling it and adding it to our community repo!
You can also install my easy-deb-chroot to access a full Debian system. With access to full Debian, I do my devlopment on-device, even using git to commit changes and then push them to the remote git repo...
