I second omeriko9. I also always let it drain completely, until it shuts down. Then I charge it until I have a green light. Only then I turn it on.

I've had no problems with this. At least psychologically I feel that this procedure gives me more battery time.

Limit download of emails per connection type (don't fetch attachments)
A better use of internal flash
