One of them transfers some of the sound and the other is a button with the N900 uses to recognise the headphones... Try with a needle or something similar and pull the button a little bit down so it will be easier for it to establish contact with the headphone plug. At least this worked for me

I have themsame issue had my N900 for 5 months got out of US so cant send back. mine is def the hardware I dont get any recognition when putting in headphones or tv out.

@lowang did your recognize the headset? if not I might try your trick as im out of the warrenty being out of US
