I will reply to myself, since I got the answer from another source. One way to force the backlight on is via dbus, with the command line command:

dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=com.nokia.mce /com/nokia/mce/request com.nokia.mce.request.req_tklock_mode_change string:unlocked
