I used to had this problem too especially when your ISP's 3G access point and its MMS access point are not the same (DiGi for me in Malaysia). The workaround I had was to install 'Connectnow' and 'Personal IP' and always see which access point I am connected to. Of course you could always see this info by clicking on the status bar and see what is your Internet connection but I find having the info on the desktop is much more easier :-).
