I have Autodisconnect installed and is has made my phone last a couple hours longer then w/o it but I still have to charge my N900 atleast twice a day...
Re-flashing is the process of re-installing the firmware on the device.
In a nutshell, just think of it as re-installing Windows (or what-ever OS) on your computer.

Re-flashing the rootfs re-installs all the phones software and defaults back to the factory settings.
Flashing the eMMC just deletes all your personal data stored on the phone in the /home/* directory.

Back on topic, I reflashed mine a few days ago, re-installed all my usual apps (and a few more) and I really have noticed a big improvement in, not only the battery life but speed of the tablet aswell.
