I can't imagine Netgear's device has much of a relationship to the Internet Tablets screen dimming issue. Yes, the Netgear falls into the category of Skype On a Device ( S.O.D.) but the N800 is a different platform. Furthermore, the auto-dimmer function issue on the N800 is not random but very consistent / repeatable.

I am going to go out on a limb here and speculate that Skype wanted the screen NOT TO DIM while a Skype-Out call was in progress, and did so intentionally for reasons I hypothesized earlier in this thread......in the same way that Mplayer does not dim the display while you are viewing a video / movie. Skype may have invoked the same method for intentionally inhibiting the auto-dimmer as Mplayer does.

What I think may have happened is that the Skype software ( I am using the latest version as of Oct. 20, 2007 - version 10014/1.7.43.38.2) neglects to re-enable / restore the N800 auto-dimmer after the Skype-Out call concludes. If I am right and this is all it is, it should be an easy fix for the Skype team once they are informed of it. I sent them a bug report this afternoon on this. Hopefully the next N8x0 Skype release will have the bug fixed. M5
