Well, I concluded the Skype-In experiment. My screen was dimmed (blanked) when I made the incoming call to Skype from my cellular phone. The N800 screen illuminated without being touched (this is good), I answered the incoming call on the N800 in the normal manner, talked to myself, and hung-up the cell phone. The N800 screen did dim as it should, on it's own.

So, it seems the Skype / dimming bug is isolated to Skype-Out functionality. The Skype-to-Skype and Skype-In functions do not crash the N800 display auto dimmer. Furthermore, Skype Chat functions in and out do not seem to disturb the N800 auto dimmer. Looks to be a Skype-Out issue only.

i own a netgear sph101 wifi skype phone, and i occasionally have similar problems. however, it seems random. i just made a skype-out call, and the screen dimmed. when the screen stays lit, i turn the phone off and on, and the problem goes away. i haven't found any other fix.

I can't imagine Netgear's device has much of a relationship to the Internet Tablets screen dimming issue. Yes, the Netgear falls into the category of Skype On a Device ( S.O.D.) but the N800 is a different platform. Furthermore, the auto-dimmer function issue on the N800 is not random but very consistent / repeatable.

I am going to go out on a limb here and speculate that Skype wanted the screen NOT TO DIM while a Skype-Out call was in progress, and did so intentionally for reasons I hypothesized earlier in this thread......in the same way that Mplayer does not dim the display while you are viewing a video / movie. Skype may have invoked the same method for intentionally inhibiting the auto-dimmer as Mplayer does.

What I think may have happened is that the Skype software ( I am using the latest version as of Oct. 20, 2007 - version 10014/1.7.43.38.2) neglects to re-enable / restore the N800 auto-dimmer after the Skype-Out call concludes. If I am right and this is all it is, it should be an easy fix for the Skype team once they are informed of it. I sent them a bug report this afternoon on this. Hopefully the next N8x0 Skype release will have the bug fixed. M5

I don't know if it is related but if you found out more about screen dimming problems I'd like to know.

I have the same problem without using skype. I don't use skype at all, actually I don't think it's even installed. But if I use any program for more than a few minutes my screen stays on permanently.

If I change settings in the display settings in control pannel and apply them the problem goes away. (at least for some time)...

any ideeas?

I have a similar problem, but only while Skype is running. When I make long calls, I'd like the screen to dim during the call. However, the screen STARTS to dim, then goes back to full brightness while I'm on a Skype call.

I haven't had any problems while I'm not on a call, however.

I've had an extra issue... my screen never dims with a Skype call (just the same as you all) but I've noticed that my screen seems to blink while I'm in a call.... (goes black all the way and then returns to normal). The call stutters a bit... and then everything is normal again...

Anyone having this other problem? Or a way to fix it?
