You don't ask it in the message, but the header asks what's the cheapest way to get 3G in the US and doesn't specify T-Mobile or anything else. The answer to that is clear, because I have it. The answer is to buy a Kindle, and the price for using 3G on your Kindle once you've bought one is nothing.

regarding VOIP: I've used skype a number of times, and it works adequately. It is not perfect, not as good as a regular cell phone call (there usually is a little lag.) but is acceptable. Gizmo does not work well over 3g for me. The voice call is not smooth, it is always choppy.
Thanks for the information.

Yeah, I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. No family to share a plan with and I only use ~200min/month. Currently I'm just using a prepaid plan since its cheaper for me.

Some people have reported success using the $10 unlimited data plan for non-smartphone along with a $29.99 300 anytime minute voice plan. This come out to the same price as the $39.99 data only plan, but on the plus side, you have another 300 minutes.

This is perhaps a little dishonest as T-Mobile expects you to be using this plan with a very cheap phone that won't/can't consume that much data. Your ethics are your ethics though.

I just remembered the other day, also, you can request to be setup on a Flexpay no-contract account. It's basically month-to-month, but you pay your bill in advance instead of getting billed.

Something Mi-Fi-ish that undercuts Verizon and Sprint would be nice.
