You can't start the N900 or flash it without battery. You can't flash without full-ish battery.
Also, in any circumstance where you suspect the battery has been drained too low, or charging issues in general, use the included wall charger and not USB to a PC.

PS: i left my n900 connected to the pc the nokia screen comes up after like 10min for 1min and then goes all black again
