It does work, I've tested it on several TVs. The trick I've found is sometimes the exact model is not there, but a similar model will be (maybe same name but different ID etc. Both models will have the same remote and so you can use it.
Also it relies on people uploading their IR codes for the remotes, and hence will not have all remotes. You can make your own IR codes by purchasing an IR receiver and logging the codes (you'd need to google how to do that, I've never needed to and hence have no experience).
As for downloading from the database, are you sure your connected to the internet? How are you downloading the remotes? What options have you chosen?
