This means that a Class 10 memory card is no better than a class 6 to be used in the phone

It probably depends a lot on the particular card (not all brands are equal), and more importantly on which kind of use you want to give it.
As I said, if you're into recording video it may help to have a higher class card, but for all other uses the class is mostly irrelevant, so I'd go for the cheaper one.
