I'm on day 2 with my newly acquired N810 OS2008.

The 'map' program is pretty basic GPS program, it doesn't calculate routes or tell you where and when to turn....well I haven't figured out all the stuff yet.

When I activate the 'map' program, outside it took like 20 minutes to lock onto 5 SATS, using 3 standard. In my office it has found 6 SATS and not locked onto any. It took about 3 minutes to find the 6 SATS.

the GPS program seems fairly decent for the freebie.

I have had no issues and I am not using any BT GPS 'modems', just the internal.

Try to install bt plugin to see if the problem lies with MM, your bt device or with OS2008 system.
There is a number of types of bt devices.
Some or most of them require pairing but you can connect bt gps alone devices without pairing ( or some I have already tested).
I am writing bt applications and full communication (two-way) protocol is really complicated requiring each bt device to respond with some status and bt type data (pairing on or off).
Bt plugin should solve your problem as you can make a selection of a type of bt device you are going to connect to.

I am just writing a nice gps navigation appplication based on 2 gps units.

Only problem I had with the latest update was a non responding gps. Had to reboot everything for it to work correctly.

I just got an N810 five days ago, and have observed the following about the GPS:

1. When Map starts, the GPS screen always displays "No GPS Connection" for about five seconds. Then it displays the globe with no satellites for about 10 more seconds.

2. 15-20 seconds after starting, the GPS screen first shows some satellites.

3. The amount of time it takes to lock into a position generally varies with the battery's state of charge. With a good charge it can be 30 seconds. With a low charge it's more like 45 seconds.

4. A couple of times it didn't get a fix at all. At one time it wasn't even seeing satellites. This seems to happen with the battery very low.

5. Warm start: Once it's got a fix, if the Map program is closed and reopened, it takes the same 15-20 seconds described in (1-2) above to start receiving satellites. Then it takes between four and 30 seconds more to reacquire the fix. It takes longer if the charge is low.

All my trials were with WiFi connected, no Bluetooth, and (I think) nothing else running.

Have you tested your N810 against external gps unit ?

I compared N810 against a 4-year old Garmin iQue 3600 PDA+GPS combo, and the Garmin is consistently quicker in obtaining a fix. It can take me several minutes to obtain a fix under clear skies with N810, even when GPS has only been off for a few hours. The Garmin averages 35-40 seconds, as normal GPSs should.

The problem is that N810 apparently uses a cheap, low-end, underpowered GPS chip. This thread has more information

Mayby N810 is some form of A-GPS chip , a-gps solution.
So to get fix quicker it needs to process A-GPS signal.
A-GPS is a common solution in some models of cell phones.
