It might also help to know what it is you are trying to do.
For example, you are more likely to find that the wifi already in your N900 can do what you want provided you have the right combination of software in it. Also, for an external device, you might actually find that building the driver for the kernel which your N900 runs might be easier and faster than compiling a whole kernel.
Then again, what is it you want to do?

I would like to use the N900 as a Wifi signal repeater, in order to extend my home network. I would like, for example, to connect to my wireless network with the n900 and share the connection via the USB Wifi stick. You think, it's possible?
