seriously its not very welcoming
and idk how to put this more respectfully, but Antilles and other gurus and such, could you please speak in simpler terms? it seems like simply the vocabulary you guys use is rather unfriendly towards newcomers. It's not very welcoming to the average Windows-using inexperienced user to immediately perform some function in Xterm without even discussing what Xterm is.

Yes, now you're going to ridicule me and say "its a command line obviously" and call me stupid, (I know now how it all works, but it took a while to learn).

Please don't assume everyone is a Linux developer, and don't treat newcomers with such harshness. Yes, he should have used search, but it is a little unwelcoming, you have to admit.

Also, can someone think of a better way to organize App releases on this site? I constantly have to find the first page of each thread (which usually has like 1000 pages of posts), and many times the latest app isnt even ON the OP, then I have to go hunting.

Part of Ubuntu's popularity is their noob friendly community.

They have avoided the usual linux holier than thou "RTFM" guru type pricks.

This community like all other linux communities is not a friendly place for anyone thats a noob.

I am in the process of purchasing a N810, and the general community here was a major factor in making my decision. It is incredible, but I am really turned off by some of what I have seen on this forum.

As a newcomer, the snarky and immature tone of a handful of people here significantly brings down the appeal of the community. I am technically savvy, but would hate to be otherwise with the reception some people get.

If it's an effort to encourage people to act in a certain way, then it is misguided. Linking to the information they're looking for, and requesting they search in the future is most likely to help encourage the behavior you want (and in theory also help improve external access to the site through search engine results).

Doing so is a hassle, but remaining silent is also an alternative---and is generally the next best thing. It avoids the frustration of responding altogether. Someone else might come along and be willing steer the newcomer in the right direction. Give them a chance.

I've managed and have been involved with many communities---and have also been guilty of the same behavior on several occasions. I recognize the damage it does and try my best to avoid it. I completely understand the frustration that newcomer naivety/noise brings when trying to create a useful resource.

I think you have a great thing here overall, and look forward to participating. Everyone who contributes has created a great resource---including the snarky/immature members, minus their unproductive comments. I have found an incredible amount of value here.

A little kindness goes along way toward retaining people who are likely to become productive members in the future.

Props to everyone involved, and I hope you receive my criticism as well intentioned---rather than another snarky post =)

That happens to all of us some times. Obviously i think the general did not mean to hurt you guys as much as you guys really are.
Anyway i think the point has been taken in by whomsoever concerned and cut the flak on GA. After all he helps lot more members than he pisses off. Give him a break

which is part of the reason why Linux hasn't taken off.
you shouldn't have to be a pro at an entire field just to do one task, or just for a certain thing.

so indirectly, people like Antilles and other snarky admins hold Linux back, and turn people off from Nokia, and in many instances, will force people to go for Apple (i dont make the rules, thats just how it is- a LARGE number of people use NIT's for music, which i know a lot of these unfriendly admins arent particularly interested in because it doesn't contain enough Linux in it).

Way to turn people off from the truly good product, guys.

The NIT is one of the few devices of its size that combines the following:

Decent speakers
Flexible storage

Multiple music players (so you can determine if you really need finger scrolling, or something basic)

Support of multiple file formats

Ability to stream a variety of music (shoutcast, pandora, last.fm)

Ability to play music off of networked sources (shared drives)

Ability to scrobble played tracks (important to those of us that listen to music on a variety of systems, but like to get a snapshot of musical taste and share them)

Ability to use torrents and download specific music.

A lot of this is due to the open nature of the device. So, I may be new here, getting an NIT strictly for music is not as dumb as your limited vision may think it is.

I don't really post / come here anymore as I got tired of all the smart people poo pooing on those that aren't 'leet enough for them. I do sysadmin for a job. I see it everyday. I don't need to be a part of it in my off time.

I agree with some of the other people. The NIT is very cool, but you need a community to figure half the stuff out, and some of this community are not very friendly.
