I cannot find one major vendor to carry them Today. I already checked. Maybe the best bet for you is to post on buy and sell see anyone of us want to part with their N800, or the forever ebay.

Of course it's discontinued; I just bought one. It now joins a set of really cool (to me) devices that I purchased just as they were on the cusp of commercial obsolescence.

I won't let that stop me from using and enjoying it, and please pardon me if I ask some dumb newbie questions on my way to whipping it into being a trusty sidekick.

Like, I installed ogg-support v0.7, but it still says "Unable to recognize file type" when trying to open my ogg-encoded music files.

Also, any recommendations for a sturdy case? Seems sturdy, but I don't know how much I want it bouncing around in my bike pack...

I seem to have fallen upon a mysterious N800 dropped off at my doorstep by UPS this morning... apparently a long-forgotten TigerDirect order I placed a week and a half ago (that I thought went unanswered and placed on "back-order" due to stock depletion) was actually fulfilled.

Imagine that.

But I'm still 998 shy of my goal.

Lewis -- you got the better deal, the 810 is not a huge step up, the cheesy little slide out keyboard ain't that great, the internal gps is ok if you are into that, but otherwise who cares? At the reduced price the N800 was a real steal, I'm glad I didn't wait cause they are now gone, gone, gone...In the last 48 hours all the sites I had flagged in my initial quest showed no availability. And with good reason, the 800 can do it all for a lot less hard cash. I spent the difference on 24 G of Transcend memory (great cards, low prices), a nice alu-leather case and an Igo bluetooth keyboard. Now I can use the world's smallest Linux computer to hack the freakin' planet (or play sudoku, whatever...). The Igo keyboards are also on their way out, word to the wise.

Nokia did not think the product cycle through, a two-tiered 800/810 product line would have sold a ton of units - but no, on to the next new toy. Newer is not always better...As to my N800, it is my new best friend, I am thinking of having it surgically attached to my left arm. It's usually there anyway, maybe the skin will eventually grow around it (ewww...).

Want to make yourself feel downright jolly about your 800? Start at maemo.org downloads, nearly 200 freebies just a few taps away. I've got ebooks, hours of vids and Live Free Die Hard in all its widescreen glory, my favorite 50 cd's, all my pictures, calculators, media players, rss feed reader, fm radio etc...and STILL have many gigs to fill. I'm stackin' up the dvd's for my summer travels. I even use it to control my squeezebox hardware, so I can sit on the sofa and run Pandora, stream my 6,600 mp3's from mp3tunes.com, or just tell my PC to stream my lossless flac music files from the external USB in the back of the house into my BIG stereo. I can even access and open files from any PC in the house via my wireless lan and my Nokia . In addition to the wiki you will find here, go to:

lots of help in this forum! Gotta go, my crossword puzzle is waiting...

N800 discontinued?? What about the N810? The Nokia website now says that THIS model is "Out of Stock" ... does the old logic apply now?

(Sorry, I couldn't resist)

But are they (the N810) also out of stock at most retailers (Answer = No, you can still find them at 95% of the online retailers out there)?

FYI - Staples.com still shows N800 in stock for $299.

When I went to order one from Staples about a month ago, the next day they called me and said it was out of stock and they'd have some in within 3-7 days. Those days came and went and it still says 'out of stock'. Its all good, though, got one off of ebay cheaper but there is always the fine print to read on ebay that you have to look out for.

Could this mean that we might be getting a new set of devices from Nokia??

Superceding the N800? Yes, I think we might be getting a "new" set of devices. Let's call them the N810 and N810W, perhaps?

While the GPS and slide out keyboard are nice they are not necessary. I'm going to see if I can get a used N800 that's is good shape. We'll see.
