and in the end we end up with pages that seems to only work on the designers own desktop computer (widescreen seems to be the latest fad).

There are *at least* two bugs related to facebook that I have seen in bugs.maemo.org recently. One is a bug in flash where it presents the wrong version. The other appears to be a JS bug of sorts.... didn't read more.

tell me about it. I have to deal with mobile-phone app & content distribution and configuration. We have a database with hundreds of phones and associated user-agents, each with countless parameters. an accepts style header that gives basic info (resolution, etc...) would make our life _so_ much easier

Well, even those who are normally sticklers about OT can't really bring ourselves to care about this sort of silly thread.

See, there's two possible responses (both include thinking "Oh here we go with another one of these threads."); we can point out that if you don't care enough to read through every thread, it obviously won't bother you much to remain ignorant, or we can be nice and "bring it all together in one thread."

One thing that bogs down this discussion is the assumption that each new tablet will be a "direct replacement" for the previous. That has not been true for the last 2, so don't automatically assume it will be going forward. That platform is still new and it is still finding its way.

So my impression that the N800 is now unpurchaseable because the N810 came out and replaced it is false? The N800 is going to reappear soon, more are on the way?

Strictly speaking, the the impression you just expressed is false. It's unpurchaseable (new, anyway) now, and will probably stay that way, but they were sold together for quite a while. (It seems pretty natural that products introduced earlier will be taken out of production earlier.)

The N810 WiMAX and non-WiMAX probably will be sold side-by-side, and the next product could be any of several options without being a "direct replacement" (or "N810 successor"): It could be an N800-like device (indeed, a direct replacement for the N800), it could be a GSM-connected device (<gasp />, a phone!), with the N810 left for carrier-independence, or even a line-up of devices covering the whole range.

If one wanted to read altogether too much into "That platform is still new and it is still finding its way.", the N800 successor could be eliminated; while I don't think that's justified, I also don't think an N800 successor is especially likely.

You're taking my comments way too far. Benson got it correct.

Actually, the same is true for the N95 and its several revisions. Each have their own + and -. Even the N96 probably has its + and - compared to the several N95 revisions. Like price :P

I believe its natural because every advantage has a disadvantage ie. double-edged sword. You can only add so much hardware or options to allow hardware add-ons. Inbetween there is a lot of complex choice.
