sungrove - have you read this entire thread? Follow the link provided by airbillion about 2 posts above yours and read the corresponding thread which has full instructions for installing the kernel using only the N800.

Alternatively, if you have access to a Linux PC you can flash your device using the Linux flasher application.

Thanks for the response Milhouse. I read all the posts. I have visited all the relevant suggested web pages and tried to make sense of them. I think someone could make some cash converting n800 kernels for others. The instructions are obviously written for people that know the language . It's OK though. I'll wait until Nokia updates the operating system. I'd like to say though that I would hope that eventually a support system can be put in place that would allow people like me to help themselves. I would think that would be a good thing for the future of this product as well.

Waiting for Nokia won't do you much good. The procedure for flashing an entire image is fairly similar to flashing the kernel. Have you a linux PC at home? If so the procedure is as follows (this is all documented at http://maemo.org/maemowiki/Flasher_tool_usage):

Download the flasher utility from maemo.org.
Download the kernel image you want to install.
Shut down the n800.
Open a linux terminal, and as root, type: ./flasher --query-root-device
The terminal window will display: Suitable USB device not found, waiting
Plug in the usb cable to the n800
Switch on the n800
A usb symbol will appear on the n800 display
On the linux terminal again, type: ./flasher --flash --kernel <kernel file that you downloaded>
Watch the linux terminal for some useful information. If it succeeds, in the linux terminal type: ./flasher --reboot

sungrove, I understand this stuff in not very newbie-friendly but is in not in fact that hard. Just couple of clicks and some typing on your N800.

First - osso xterm and becomeroot means clicking this
http://maemo-hackers.org/osso-xterm.install
selecting open button and confirming installation will give you X terminal and then click this
http://eko.one.pl/maemo/dists/bora/u....1-2_armel.deb
which gives you ability to get root privileges.

After you have both packages installed, click this
http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/kernel_flasher.tgz
and this
http://intr.overt.org/n800-sdhc-kernel/sdhc-kernel.bin
and download to your N800 as described in already mentioned thread and post here http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...7606#post37606
To enter those commands open X terminal from Extras menu.
That's all.

Thanks for taking the time to put together your responses to my question. I'm quite impressed. You're right. I have no Linux computer. If I do in fact get this to work for me I'll do the best I can to get this together for other newbies like me and post it. Fanoush, I tried clicking your osso xterm link above and my windows xp computer could not open it. Apparently there is a program I need to open it with. Where do I get that?

Neil, you're supposed to install it on your N800 and not on your Windows XP.

Yes, these are two different ways. For the one described by me you need only your N800 conected to net. You need to click those links on your N800. The other way described by w14 in the official way provided by Nokia to developers. It needs linux on your PC and you need to do the procedure on your PC with N800 conected over usb cable.

I downloaded those files to my Nokia. Worked fine. They went into my mydocument folder. I can find them there.

I then opened x-terminal from the extras folder on the Nokia and tried entering the code you wrote in the post you mention. Problem I now need to solve is that - Do I type all the code you wrote and then press something or do what? The best I could come up with was to press the return key. But nothing happened. Well maybe nothing is supposed to happen. Hmm.. Seems like I'm close. What now? It appears that the idea at this point is to activate the flasher right? And then tell it what to do with the kernel. But I don't get how to use x-term since I've never used it before. I promise I'll look for instructions on that soon. Meanwhile, any thoughts?

the becomeroot deb file is program which should be installed too. You need to click 'open' button and install it, not just download it somewhere. without this kernel flasher script just exits.

Could you tell me what is actually happening when the script does what it's supposed to do in x-term? I assume that it is supposed to open or activate the flasher tool which then uses the becomeroot software to install the modified kernel, right? Why is it that when I type the script into the opening page of x-term, nothing happens? What exactly is one supposed to do in x-term? I have the files that fanoush had me download in the documents folder that the download dialogue box suggested. And I have comfirmed that I have installed becomeroot. It seems like I'm nearly there. I just need to understand how to use x-term I guess and/or make sure that x-term knows where to get what it needs.
