I have tested N900 extensively without speaker protection. Sine-waves become well audible above approximately 200hz.
Over the course of time I have fried both speakers, so be extremely careful, and cut out that bass.

I have just lowered the speakers further so it no longer has as much of a speaker blowing risk.....which wasn't much to begin with....
