If you have an older tablet (770, N800, N810) you should have a headset at your disposal.

Eliminate variables. That's the key to solving problems.
Not hardware fault:

The headphone works. It used to work on it a few days ago. Now it not working. But in x-terminal it say connected.

So it found the hardware but cannot load the hardware via software detection. So it's a software issues.

If i did a fast swapping method, it will work.

I also have the same problem, with my Nokia N900, previously it was working fine... then after a two months, left side of headphone stopped working, and now as I stopped using it for a week or so and now I am trying to connect it, it is not at all detecting.... please provide me solution if it is software problem, let me know.

I have same problem after only 1 month from new. If I wiggle the jack when its only half way plugged in I get clicks in the phones like switching happening... in that position turning the jack around sometimes (but rarely) switches the audio to the phones. If the audio gets switched then it stays on no probs with positioning of the pklug. Therefor I suggest that its not hardware as if the jack socket switch was connectingly badly the OS would assume the headphones had been removed but like I said, once its switched over to the skt output the audio stays switched. Anyone else with this problem remember if it started after any particular s/w install/upgrades? Maybe theres a common denominator there? Lets not go openong the device and bending contacts about yet then!

Same problem here, my last actions were:
-playing music at a party
-trying to output music through FM transmitter

achivements:
- if I plug in my headphones 3/4 back and fort until It works
- it also works randomly (i guess it is a software bug) sometimes i keep them plugged and click here and there and voila they are detected

untested:
i will check mic impedance with and ohmeter maybe it changed
(edit: an ohmeter is not enought)
