The 1 tangible benefit that I can discern to this event is: free publicity.
Another one: it could be a unifying exercise for this community.
The free publicity could potentially turn negative if any dishonest practice (mass botnet voting, etc) is behind the win. Then again, any publicity is good publicity eh? ;p

we are winning by more than half, we don't need a competition to proove that this is the best device ever, just search youtube, and u'll see how is it able to run android2.2, windows 98, mac osx, ubunto, easy debian...... u'll see how every android app and game work on this device, u see how is it overclocked to 1.15 ghz by a click of a button, u'll see that it can hack the ps3, u'll see that it can doo ssh, this thing can do everything, and before i forget did u all see the number of emulators we have ???
thank u maemo community, who needs nokia when we have u guys.
But people outside the circle don't realize that, so they just see it as a smartphone (kinda like seeing a desktop computer as a really expensive typewriter). I think it does the world more good to let people know: hey, you're missing out on something awesome. And if the N900 doesn't win, then it would be a real pity when someone shopping around for a device just says, "I glanced at the FoneArena Smartphone Championship and this Galaxy S thing won, so I figured I'd get that."
No, this is not just some popularity contest. This is a chance for open source devices to stake a claim on the map. It does matter. Go vote. Now.
