...and the last crisis with Nokia where Jolla had to spend considerable effort rewriting the closed bits in the N9.

I didn't read the previous messages about financial details. But we can also think as the same actions made some years ago for Blender.

Blender was closed source. And when the company which hold it got to bankruptcy, they asked for 100 k€ to fully open the source code. The Blender community managed to gather this funding, and then Blender became free.

That's something I can figure out in case Jolla has to close, even if I don't want to see this.

I also really don't want to see this happen, but indeed we can morbidly estimate that it would be probably easier to pry the source code from the hand of creditors (given enough money) than the unsuccessful attempts to do the same from the hands of a still existing company infected by an evil entity (Nokia for the N9/N900 closed components that still probably slowly rot on tape backups somewhere in a cold Scandinavian warehouse).

I think realistically whatevers going to happen to Jolla will happen. But I hope this community just doesn't abandon the work that was done with HADK and libhybris, and obviously SailfishOS.

Is it possible for Jolla to get bailout funding/loan from the Finnish government to keep them going a few years? Even after that, if Jolla fails and can't it pay back the loan, it wouldn't be a total loss for Finland as a good chunk of the of the funding would diffuse back into the Finnish economy anyway. People have to pay rent, buy food, pay taxes (another way the money goes back to the government!) and so forth. Jolla has made great strides. It just needs a little more time to mature. Finland: Water the roots and enjoy the fruit.

Well, without the complete source code this would not be simple to carry on.

Still, worst case, maybe we can pull a Blender ?

Eq. the community could buy the (otherwise useless) source code from the creditors like the Blender project did.

They might be more willing to cooperate than existing companies that just kept hold to it forever for no good reason (like what happened with source code for the Fremantle and Harmattan closed components).

EDIT:
Looks like romu beat me with the Blender idea.

I do not live in Finland and do not know what the local customs are in similar cases but based on what I have seen of the government bailouts in my country, I say, no bailouts. Jolla is a commertial company, not a registered charity.

I remember somebody suggesting the same for Nokia and the Finnish government essentially said "no" and that Finland is open for business etc. etc.. Then again, Elop used to be the CEO, so I don't blame the Finnish government :P

Well, the US bailed out Wall Street and the Automotive industry. They are doing great now. Jolla should consider moving its main offices to Washington DC...
