I'm not voting as it is completely pointless. I tried for years with many other people to try to persuade Psion to give up parts of the EPOC R5 source code, the SDK/DDK, or even just the OS flashing tools so we could build our own Linux distro for their Series7/netBook machines. Heck, they even had a fully running Linux distro internally but wouldn't release the code for the drivers.

They wouldn't listen even though they had stopped making consumer devices completely, so there was no financial harm that could become them from people not renewing devices. Now I fully understand about EPOC becoming Symbian, and there being legal code constraints for that, but to not even contemplate the linux driver code just shows that corporates don't care.

Go ahead and have your poll. I'd love them to do it, but like every other company out there, they won't.

i heard a rumor a while back that nokia is actually too embarrassed to release some of there code (maybe it was with regards to BME?). although the excuse you will always hear is protecting proprietary software (like the the revolutionary calendar backend that cant even remember birthdays!!) excuse my cynicism, but weve been down this road before and it aint gonna happen.

I understand your grief John and as much as i sympathise with you if you take a non stance then what will be won?.
This has a far better chance to happen if every member of this Community has a vote and the Poll shown directly to members of Nokia along with added pressure (please read Vi's post).

This is purely for the benefit of Nokia N900 owners and this Community so please think about this John ok.

ok i have a suggestion. if the end goal is so the community can continue to support the n900 and maemo, would it be possible to strike an in between solution where nokia releases the full code base to the cssu team but hae them sign ndas so as not to allow the commercial bits to be released under open source??

Why not ask them for a million dollars too while your at it.....or you could try to learn some skills and join the people that are already running alternatives (meego, shr, kubuntu, archlinux etc) to make everything work. As far as I can tell, all the drivers are there, it is just a matter of getting them to run and adapting/creating interfaces. Even if some of the drivers are closed source...who cares? Are you gonna edit the driver source anyway? no. Take the meego kernel, firmware and modules and run whatever flavor of linux you like (with u-boot)....simple.
